J1 visa, for how long in the U.S. ???

Hello everyone! I hope our fellow canuck students who are currently in residency, finished residency or about to start in an American program can tell me how long the J1 last in the U.S. ?

Once your J1 is expired, and let say you are Board certified in the States, can you find an institution who is willing to sponsor you an H1B ?

THANKS IN ADVANCE!

The ECFMG website states the doctor can stay in the US for the length of time needed to complete a ACGME residency. Extensions are allowed, for ACGME subspecialties/chief resident/fellowships, up to a maximum of seven years. Some fellowships can be 'non-standard' i.e., non-ACGME. Extensions have to be approved by the home country. Note that doctors are not entitled to the maximum of seven years.
