If you plan well you can write it in the spring of your PGY5. Otherwise you will have to wait until the next available exam. I think they only offer the psych exam once a year but I am not certain. Check with the Royal College.

I thought that even if I have to do an extra year to meet the requirements I could take the exam before finishing my 5 th year as you told me but they rejected that as a plan. Anyway I will ask the royal college again. Thanks.

Canadians in residency can write their exams in spring of their final year, with the assumption they will finish their programs in June. Similarly, you can write in your fifth and final year. Remember you will do the Preliminary Assessment by april 30 of your PGY4, in order to write the exam one year later. The RCPSC will issue a ruling letter in December, while you are in the fellowship. You will have to tell them for the Assessment that you are doing a fellowship. The ruling letter will allow you the first opportunity to write the exam in spring of your PGY5. Planning. Planning. Planning.
