This is the plan: MCQE1 Fall 2008
MCQE2 Fall 2009
Certification by the Royale College 2012

Do I need anything else?

Thanks.
A typical action plan for psychiatry would be:

4 years ACGME accredited adult psychiatry
1 year ACGME accredited fellowship
or
3 or 4 years adult psychiatry
2 years child and adolescent psychiatry
apply for preliminary assessment by april 30 of the year before you will write the RCPSC exam in psychiatry, i.e., by april 30 of PGY4
pass the MCC QE I and II by end of PGY3
request extension of statement of need to change to fellowship
write RCPSC exam in spring of PGY5 (i.e, in final year in US
write American board exam after residency is finished
apply for licence in Canada / seek job in Canada

It doesn't need to be any more complicated than that.

I was told by health canada that I need to take the exam when I have met all the requirements for psychiatry, so I need to take it when I am done with residency.

If you plan well you can write it in the spring of your PGY5. Otherwise you will have to wait until the next available exam. I think they only offer the psych exam once a year but I am not certain. Check with the Royal College.

I thought that even if I have to do an extra year to meet the requirements I could take the exam before finishing my 5 th year as you told me but they rejected that as a plan. Anyway I will ask the royal college again. Thanks.

No, you can't write before your fifth year. You can write in spring of your fifth year, i.e., during your fellowship. The RCPSC won't allow you to write until it has agreed you have met its requirements by doing a four year program and a one year fellowship.

Canadians in residency can write their exams in spring of their final year, with the assumption they will finish their programs in June. Similarly, you can write in your fifth and final year.

Remember you will do the Preliminary Assessment by april 30 of your PGY4, in order to write the exam one year later. The RCPSC will issue a ruling letter in December, while you are in the fellowship. You will have to tell them for the Assessment that you are doing a fellowship. The ruling letter will allow you the first opportunity to write the exam in spring of your PGY5. Planning. Planning. Planning.

statement of need requreiments

Hi,

I am a Canadian citizen and Ontario resident. As per the health ontario website, If I want a statement of need I need to provide the prove of my residence in Canada. Currently I am holding an Ontario health card but not Driver License. My question is: Is their any other way to prove my residence in Canada??? Please advise....it is urgent.

I had the same problem so I gave them a copy of my apartment lease. Just tell them before that you simply dont have a drivers license. GL.

You must have a driver's license AND an OHIP card. There is no way around it and there are no exceptions. Providing an apartment lease will not suffice. They are very strict about this because ppl were falsely claiming Ontario residency, when in fact they lived in another province. If you dont have a license, go to Ontario and try to apply for one.
