returning to canada

lets say one were to do their residency on a J-1 visa in the states and completed all the requirements for canadian liscencing (examinations, correct number of years in U.S. residency, etc...). When it came time for the 2 year return to canada requirement, would one be able to work and find a job as if the did everything in canada.

If your school is approved by the province, you pass MCQ Iⅈ and your residency is approved by the Royal college, and you pass the Royal college exams you can apply for a permanent licence in any province. This will allow you to get a billing number and allow you to work in canada.

2cents,

this application that you speak of; is it just a procedure, meaning is it gonna be approved with the same success rate as if i did my degree at any north american school? and if its that easy, why are people tryig to get lousy canadian res. if they can just get a good american one and come back?

I can not speak for anyone else but issues that came up for me (ie want to return to canada for residency):

1. After 4/5 years away from home I wanted to go back. The prospect of another 3-6 years of training is another long haul

2. Residency options are not very good as a IMG requiring a VISA to train in the states.

3. Given the choice I would rather not be in the states.

4. I did/do not want to have to write both US and Canada licencing exams. It is expensive and time consuming.

The process of obtaining a canadian licence is not simple. There will be a lot more hoops to jump through than if you did training in canada/US. However if your school is WHO/IMED listed, you pass the MCQEs, complete an equivalent lenght ACGME residency, and pass the Royal college exams you will get licenced in canada.

Hi 2cents. I'm trying to figure: how long does it take to prepare for those exams? Do you have to study full time as USMLE requires? Is it so terrible?

Yes, it is feasible to go back to Canada after you finish residency. Start looking for a job at the start of your final year of residency. You only have to do 2 yrs; not 4-5 yrs like somebody else wrote on this forum. That 4-5yr requirement does not apply to J-1 visa. And after the 2yrs, if u want to come back to the States, you can; or you can stay in Canada and practice there.
