You do make an interesting point, but being a doctor isn't just about the income, it's about accepting the responsibility granted to you by your existence. You have been given the good fortune of being raised in a well-educated technologically-proliferated and proficient society.
It is my view, at least, to provide what I can to those who aren't so lucky. I mean, I'm a white middle-class male. I've got so much ahead of me, and convictions because of it. The fact that I've generated guilt for my luck is beside the point; I don't give a nickel to every chump with a "Please give" sign beside an upturned cap, and I don't give to charity. The most I do is to sort my cardboard and my plastic into recyclable containers.
Being a doctor is a chance to make right with the world- to alleviate suffering and pain. To make sure that some people will be provided the help that they need, even if they're unable to pay the bills. People who are less fortunate simply deserve a chance to improve their wellbeing, and that starts with the basic health to develop themselves.
I'm an idealist, but dammit, I can't help myself.
