visa for clinicals

Hi guys,

What kind of visa do we need to do clinicals in US. If it's B1 then why do we need a visa (if you're a canadian citizen, i was told by a US immigration officers that Canadians don't need tourist visa).

Anyone with any experience pls help me out.

There are as many answers as there are immigration "specialists" advising at each of the medical schools. So ask whoever it is you're arranging your rotations with. The following are ones I've seen/heard of: none, B1, J1, F1. Ah yes, the joy of red tape.

Yeah, but which visa are you currently on or most people are on...(this question goes to anyone who's in clinical rotation right now and is canadian citizen.

Also, does ur hospital actually check to see if you have the appropiate visa.

pls help..thanks

Guys, doing rotations in the US is not being a tourist! You are attending school. You need a B1 visa. Get it at the border. Bring a letter from your school saying you are going to rotate at hospitals affiliated with a US university.

I'll repeat myself for the sake of clarity:

Ask whoever it is you're arranging your rotations with, i.e. the hospital. Different places have different requirements.

I've held most of the following visa types at one point or another while doing rotations: none, B1, J1, F1.

And yes, I'm a canuck.

Does anyone know about the cap on B1 visa renewals? I have heard that you can only renew it once and then they reject you.. or is there an exception for carib. students that I don't know about as long as you have school paperwork? Any ideas?

Assuming you are in my scenario, Canadian born citizen all you need for clerkship is a letter from the hospital in question stating that this is a "NON-PAID MEDICAL CLERKSHIP TRAINING" or words that are similar.
You take that letter to the airport, show it to the US customs person,
along with the standard thingy that you have to fill out for us embarkment,
and in my case the ICE officer, stamped the paper you fill out, looked at the letter and swiped my passport and that is it for cliniclas. However, rules
may have changed since then. Please consult canada.usembassy.gov
Moreover, I think its a B1 visa that you need.
