Hey guys,
I might be thinking way, way ahead, but i am sure you guys must have thought about this as well...someday and if not, then pls think now (jk). Anyway, if there are that many canadians in carribean school and if they are taking loans, then how do they end up paying those loans. Cuz i believe it's nearly impossible to go back to canada and suppose if you get a J1 visa with that 2-year return home condition, then how do you pay for your loan during that period. I mean I was born in Canada so i know how that country treats IMG/ FMG's and since all the carribean students will be considered in that category (IMG/ FMG)...when they go back to Canada to fulfill that 2-yr requirement, i know they won't be able to find any job in Canada. Sorry let me correct myself...There is always the truck driving, Taxi driving or labour work available for medical graduates (i know that). But other than that I mean how would these carribean graduates pay up their interest payments during that 2-year period. Also, i was just reading a post by someone claiming that he/she has passed USMLE step 1, but is unable to find any residency spots in US. OMG....that is really, really bad. No JOB, 200K debt, stupid country won't help out its own citizens (what do you do?). I am sorry if i have bashed out canada, nevertheless, i am sure everyone will agree that what i am saying is a reality. Canada doesn't help out it's IMG's !!! what can we do to change those laws? Anyone's opinion will be greatly appreciated. And Americans pls empathize with us Canadian on this. (lol) |

As far as I know the possibility of coming back to Canada after studying wherever rather than North America is somewhat zero, assuming that the competition gets intense each year.
I've talked to a lot of Canadian IMGs with regard to their situation and the only thing they keep saying is that forget Canada once you leave North America. Off topic: In case of foreign-trained dentists the situation gets even harder since they are required to go through the qualifying programs in both Canada and the US. Quote:

Yes I do know that Canadians do not come to Canada for residency from the carribeans. But within the past 2 or 3 years, a few have been able to make it through Carms and other IMG programs but numbers on these successes are hard to find hence my curiosity. If anybody have some good confrimed numbers, that will be great.

You can return to Ontario or do J1 waiver
I did my internship and residency in the US and will return to Ontario to do an additioanl PGY year through the repatriation program. Loans do not have to be repayed until training status is over.
