Egyptian IMG -can I re-do medical school in Canada?
I will be a permanent resident and living in Halifax, Canada. I graduated from Suez Canal University (it is on the WHO list) in Egypt. It was a 6 year program. I feel that applying for residency throught CaRMS is a waste of time and also would like the Canadian experience and knowledge I would gain from re-doing medical school there. I will list my experience and qualifications below and I hope someone can tell me what my chances are and even if they allow that type of entry to Dalhousie Medical School.
About Me: 25 years old 6 year degree in Medicine and Surgery, Egypt ( 82.6%) 2nd in class, year 2 4th in class year 4, 28th in class year 6 (got married, had baby) 1 year manager of Al-Borg Laboratory (also a sample doctor there) 1 year health upgrading consultant to the United Nations Development Program in Egypt (designing and conducting health campaigns in slum areas including being the one to introduce the idea of screening poor areas for avian flu in Ismailia) 1 year Pharmacist assistant at local pharmacy level C CPR/FIRST AID Certificate of emergency medicine and first aid research for UNDP on prevelant diseases in slum areas research leader of a group of 239 students in field of community medicine research on occupational effects on hearing 1 year clinical observership in general and hepatic surgery hospital just started masters in Medical Education ( a new program here and the only one in the middle east) National rowing champion of Egypt 3 consecutive years references from Harvard and Brown graduate doctors who were my professors and know me personally Student Council president in high school 100% average from high school willing to take the MCAT whenever please help me figure out my best plan, I really want to go to Dalhousie...am I competitive? Another question, if accepted to dalmed, would I be guarunteed a residency position when I graduate? Last question is am I eligible for a full Canada/NS student loan if I enter medicine and have very low income with a wife and a child who are both citizens? (me being a permanent resident freshly landed at the time of application) I know this is exhaustive but I cant seem to find anything to answer my specific questions, Dal just referred me to their website, which was no help. All help is greatly appreciated AbuNoah |

You are able to apply to Canadian medical schools as long as the requirements are met for each school individually. General requirements: 1- Canadian citizenship or Permanent residency (for most schools a must have) 2- Basic sciences (chem, bio,...), although some schools want you to have a Bachelor's degree 3- A valid MCAT score 4- A valid TOEFL or IELTS score 5- Have some extracullicular activities which in your case you have a lot (good for you) also they might need you to get Letters of Recomandation(LORs) from your profs. Since you have already an MD from Egypt, you may want to get your credentials evaluated and include them in your application. As for Dal med school I would suggest you to visit the school personally and ask your questions. Hope it helps, Good luck |

Just some of my few thoughts. Why do you want to go back to medical school after your MD in Egypt. Instead of going through 4 years again in medical school (i.e. if you can get the admission), why not use the 4 years trying for a residency. It is not only Carms that you can get a residency. Most provinces have sepearte programs outside of Carms for IMG's for residency. In N.S you might want to look at the CAPP route. Newfoundland also have a good program. You will be far better of than re-applying to medical schools. I am yet to hear of an IMG who has been able to get back to med school in Canada (anybody know an IMG who has done that). Even to transfer from a foreign medical school to a Canadian Med School is about next to impossible. I know of one person in Ontario who had tried Queens and Univ of Ottawa but without any success. Anyway it doesn't hurt to try but it is better to spread your wings than looking only at going back to med school as the solution. Somebody has mention the US and it is still worthconsidering that as much as your wife may hate it. It might be a better solution for a few years of residency over there and you can always come back to Canada after that. Just my two cents.
