Anyone who has had problems with a landlord issue in E-EU can probably agree that it is incredibly frustrating, and students often have very little recourse. With that in mind, it is a good idea to help incoming students to steer clear of the bloodsuckers who are looking to rip off newbies from foreign countries.
If anyone has anything to post, this is a good place for it! Just remember not to post full names, in keeping with TOS.
Here is my own submission:
In Sofia, absolutely avoid renting any apartment from V. or E. J-e-k-o-v. These landlords live in Hamburg, Germany, but they own and rent out an apartment on Solunska Street. In order to avoid paying taxes on their property, they refuse to register students as actually living in the apartment, and officially try to register them as living with their relatives on the outskirts of town.
This is problematic because the Immigration Police completes periodic spot checks on foreigners, and if you are not living where you are registered, they will deport your sorry butt. Pointing this out to the landlords apparently is then considered grounds for telephonic threats of violence (to a family with a three-year-old) and skullduggery of the most inappropriate sort... so you want to avoid these people. I even made the mistake of recommending another apartment in the building to my classmate, and she had the same sort of problems. The fact that this classmate remains my friend only speaks to her incredibly kind and understanding nature.
They are, truly, utterly horrible people. Steer well clear.
