I'm fluent in Bulgarian. I hold a physical therapy degree and a law degree from Sofia university. I'm planing to (start/need to be accepted) first next year ( 2011)

I can put you in touch with someone (a Bulgarian) who just started here after completing his BSc degree in the US. Send me a Private Message and I will try to get you in contact with him.

    Of course I understand.

Thanks, I'm not trying to be a dork, I just want to make these things happen. If you come here and our clinical interests overlap I will be happy to put you in touch with the same places.

My brother graduated in BG and now is an MD in US. This was 5 years ago when he apply for residency but he didn't do clinical during medical school in the US.

Yes, five years ago the process was a lot easier. It is getting more competitive and many places are starting to require USCE. In fact, one of the residencies I was interested in requires a full year of US clinical experience now... which I will not have.

Can you please clarify for me USIMGs ( I assume something like....international medical graduate?)

Yeah, USIMG = United States International Medical Graduate. This is different than other FMGs (Foreign Medical Graduates) because the USIMG is a US Citizen, which helps a lot in getting a residency.

Gongrats on the baby and good luck on the exam? Are you going to take it there or you are taking it in US?

Thanks! I will be writing Step One in Geneva, Switzerland. (It is not offered in Bulgaria). Next summer I will complete Step Two CS in the States, because that Step is not offered anywhere overseas.

Thanks so much your your help

Sure! When will you be coming over?

    Hello to everyone!
I'm choosing right now medical school in Europe and I think that Sofia is a good choice for me.

I read arista's post that there are many Greeks studying in Sofia Medical School. Of what nationality or ethnicity is the majority of students there?

In the current 5th year class there are 3 Greeks, 1 Egyptian, 4 Kuwaiti/Indians, 2 Canadians, 4 Americans (3 of whom are of Indian descent), 1 Brit, and 3 Indians. Other classes have more Indians, or more North Americans, etc.

Frankly, as someone currently in the program, I would urge you to consider other EU options before deciding on medical school in Bulgaria. If you speak a European language, look seriously at Western European schools. If you speak English only, apply to the Irish schools. Poland has several good options, as well.

    And I agree...

I second DevilDoc's opinion about seriously looking at other medical universities. Cost is not the only consideration. There are good things here but also some very bad things in terms of the policies and care for foreign students from the administration.
Bulgaria, in addition, is not an easy country to live in at times as well.

I plan, in the future to write a post in regards to my final evaluation of the university. Meanwhile, please pm every student possible in order to get a clear and frank evaluation.

    Best of luck.

    Student Agency

Hi, I am currently studying medicine in eastern europe and I have found that when applying to universities it is better to use a student agency that helps with admission, looking for flats a whole variety of things that you will find difficult to do on your own. The student agency i used was Minaret Student Agency you can find them on the website which you can find when you type it into google.
