    Hello everyone,
Time is dwindling down to look for a school and being a prospective student of medical schools (I'm feeling very confident with Charles in Prague) I would like to know some information about the Medical University in Varna, Bulgaria. Let me tell you why I'd consider this school even though the country is not in the EU:

    Pros:
    - The school hates agents and has a North American office that doesn't charge a dime for any services they do

    - The school uses a different accreditation system than the rest of of Europe. Also, it is similar to that of the USA's system. It used the Middle States system which my own university in the USA uses right now. Also, even though it's not in the EU, the degree is good in Great Britain.

    - You can do a lot of clinicals in the USA. This is where I need help. Does anyone know how the amount of clinical work that can be done in the USA?

    Cons:

    - Very difficult language to learn

    - Country is not in the EU

Please help me. Is this a university that is worth my while? Should I consider it or just to Charles?

Thanks very much for your time,
    Andrew Shaker

    Just a couple points.

-Regarding acceptance of the Bulgarian degree in the UK. I believe that you would still have to take the PLAB, unless Bulgaria enters the EU by the time you graduate. (Contrast this to Charles, where you would be eligible to apply for an internship immediately following graduation, provided that you can meet the citizenship/residency requirements.) Check out the GMCs map at http://www.gmc-uk.org/register/map.htm

-Regarding US clinicals. Be very, very careful. Make sure that the place you do them at has an ACGME residency program in that specialty. Some states may even ask for formal affiliations.

    Varna 4 year program

Does any one know whether Varna has a 4 year program. If it does, how problematic would it be to find a residency in th US?

    Medical University of Varna, Bulgaria

    HI,
I am an Indian Medical graduate interested in doing my PG in the field of radiology.

I am unable between the university of Sofia and St. Petersburg (pavlov).

I believe that Sofia offers the course for 4 years and St. Ptb 3

I will have to learn bulgarian for 3 months but russian for 6 months.
But, which one is a better institue ?

will it be beneficial later to do PG in europe considering that I am not an EU citizen?

I shall be happy if some one can help upon this.
    Regards
    HIagro

Without residency rights/nationality, doing PG training maybe very difficult. Also, do not count on Bulgaria being admitted in 2007. Hungary and the Czech Republic were both "promised" admission for a number of years prior to 2004. If practicing in the EU is what you would like to do, go to an EU school now.

    bulgaria

for your information, the radiology course in bulgaria is 4 years with 6 months of language training.. just last year, 2 very flamboyant doctors completed their course in radiology. The standard of education is good.

Getting into a Bulgarian medical school

I suspect that getting in will be of medium difficulty considering the amount of money you will pay for foreign tuition fees.
Getting out and getting a good residency spot is a whole other matter. Lots and lots of self-motivation and determination required.
Do not underestimate how tough it is to live here for six years. You will find that although there are many good people and physicians here, the society is not for the faint-hearted. Also, you must, must, must learn the language as fast as possible in order to take full advantage of what is available to you.

I also cannot comment on the state of the medical school in Varna itself, as I am not a student there. This is not considered to be the very best medical school in the country although it is probably decent.
