Student Visa for US Students in Australia

I got into an Australian school and am told that classes start February 28, I just sent out my Stafford loan forms for certification. How difficult is it for a US citizen such as myself to get a student visa to study in Australia? Do I need to go to an interview? My parents are going to pay my living expenses, can I give them a note from my mother that they are going to help support my living costs? I had about 200 dollars in my checking account and closed it. I noticed the Washington DC consulate processes visa applications and I live far away from DC. Also with Stafford loans, have most of you who have applied gotten them in time? Any info would be appreciated. Also does anyone know of any private lenders that offer loans for schools in Australia? I am kind of worried that this might take longer and I will wind up starting school late.
