Australian Admissions
Hi everyone,
I hope you are all doing well. I really have my heart set on attending an Australian medical school. I was just wondering what my chances were of getting in...assuming: I apply to an undergrad program (5-6 years) I have have a 3 year bachelor degree from Canada Do you know what kind of marks I need to secure a postition there? Do they place more importance on my highschool marks? My highschool marks are in the 90's but my university marks are a bit below 80. From what I understood Australia has maybe more than 100 positions for international students, but is it true they prefer North American students to say countries where English is not the first language? Sorry I asked so many questions... I guess I would just like to have an idea of what my chances are if I apply to all available undergrad med programs there. Any help would be sincerely sincerely! appreciated. Thank you so much.. |

Your highschool marks of the 90's might be able to get you into some highschool entry programs...but this depends on what else you have to offer. Basically if you can do well on interviews or you show them some good LORs I think you stand a chance. As for your University marks I think that if you want to save some time (ie going the post grad route) you should apply to some of those schools too. Your 80 percent should at the least get you an interview some where. Note that you will also require MCAT scores. If you don't have these than undergrad unis are the only way to go. Curious, what are your plans after graduation? States, Australia? This may have an impact on your decision. There are actually over 200 spots per year if you include undergrad and post grad unis. As for which type of student Austraila prefers, I don't think they are biased against anybody. But lets face reality here the "non" english speaking students coming to Australia aren't ppl. that got rejected in their own country, they are ppl. that are coming here for the "prestige" of the Aussie degree in their own country. Thus you will be competing with some very talented ppl. = hence the rumour that there is prefereces for these ppl...as I said it's not true, they just have very good grades. Hope this helps. |

re: info
You may wish to check www.studentdoctor.net. Alot of the questions you're asking have been discussed there.
No firm answers for most of your questions. I can't say whether you're competitive. I haven't seen any posts confirming people in your boat. I have similar marks, and am waiting on a reply. Cheers, Silenthunder |
