Apply residency 2007 w/o family practice or duing doing it

Hi guys.

I have recently been given option to put off family practice rotation until 11/06 at wykoff, which is my final core rotation. Thus I can study more for step 2 that is coming around this september with possible time off. It was originally scheduled from july 15-september1. I understand that in order to match 2007, we would have to have everything ready by this November, which is a deadline for 2007 match. AUC clinical people says that Family practice is unfortunately 6 weeks instead of 4 at Wykoff. Wykoff requires it to be 6 wks according to the clinical people at MEAS.

Do you guys know if it is still feasible to apply residency by this November while still doing Family practice during same month?

Hope all are well.

ken

Hey ken...you should be able to apply for the match even if you haven't done FP. It's an 'elective', although not for AUC. Regardless, you don't need it to apply for the match.

I know people who have applied for the match without fully completing their cores, or were in the process of completing their cores.

No worries my friend...

PS. I plan on putting my FP rotation off for a while...at least until the end of the year or early next year. It's not on my 'top priority' list in term of electives.

Hi jah****

It take off huge pressure off our shoulder especially FP core at wykoff. I hear they scut you to the pont of burn out and it is 6 weeks which is a way too long.

Scut work is a counter learning in essence and it is sheer waste of time otherwise may have been put in for learning. When I was in OB/GY rotation, my favorite atteding would tell me that I should never let them to scut me out and I would have to participate. He was one of the surgoens that let me do suturing and D/C procedueres instread of holding retractors, which is tedious and no way of learning.

According to First Aid Ward Author, Scut work and pimping have been documented and published on journal JAMA (1989;262:2541-2:263:1632c). It quotes " it supresses spontaneous or intellectual questions or pursuits, creats antogonistic atmosphere, and perpetuates medical student abuse".

Of course, if I help the intern with scut works, I gets more teaching from them. it is almost an inevitable part of being med student.

But enough is enough. We have to study and heck the step 2 with full grace as we did on step 1.

Take care my friend.

again, at wyckoff it really depends who you have.....i had a lot of pointless work to do during the preventitive portion but it gave me a lot of studying time.....during inpatient i barely had any scutwork, mainly bc i said no when i got ridiculous things and also bc i had a great attending and PGY2

why not set up your FP rotation elsewhere. There are TONS of places that will take foreign medical students for FP rotation.

Here's one in Denver.

ken, you don't need to finish rotations to apply for the match..i think you had to finish rotations beofore february of your match year, and need your diploma and ecfmg by the time you start residency.

double check b/c i haven't looked at it in a while....wow we are getting ready to match...we're all grown up...well at least some of you are

actually, I know of people who are finishing up by even May and are in the match this year! You had to get in contact with the school to let you graduate during an off-date.
