Finished with my surgical rotation at Jamaica Hospital Medical Center

Whoa...what a sweet 3 months it's been. At the end of the week i will be finished with with my surgical rotation.

If you haven't guessed it already, i absolutely loved the rotation. I loved the craziness during the Q2 trauma month! What a rush. I was fortunate enough to see a LOT of interesting trauma cases, and elective procedures as well.

Jamaica hospital is a level I trauma center with our surgical residents rotating from Cornell Med. A handful of great attendings are also from Cornell, so this rotation is for real.

Here's how the rotation was broken down:
1. 1 month of trauma, Q2. Nobody was ever there 24 hours...it was always more. The longest I stayed was 31 hours, and the shortest was probably 25 hours.

2. 1 month of general surgery w/ surgical clinics interspersed within the month. clinics ranged from neurosurgery, plastics, ENT, gen surgery, opthamology, vascular, etc. This was a pretty 'laid back' month...it's what you made of it. When not scheduled for a clinic, you would scrub in on cases in the OR.

3. 2 weeks of orthopedics. Great rotation...especially with the resident team I had. It's hit or miss depending on the residents. The residents are from NYU Center for Joint Disease, one of the largest (if not largest) orthopedics program in the country. Another rotation that is 'for real'.

4. 1 week of urology. see some pretty interesting cases. you work with a great PA, although it was unfortunate that he was on vacation when I had urology. Instead i 'hung out' with one of the attendings and got to see a lot more procedures than i would have otherwise...even at another hospital! Not too shabby...

5. 1 week of SICU. Hit or miss. The PA is very nice. the staff is great. I got lucky and saw some pretty sweet stuff up there. I was fortunate enough to see an organ procurement as well. The heart went to Hopkins, the liver and a kidney to NYU, and another kidney to somewhere in California...Kern perhaps?! probably not...

And that's the 3 months in a nutshell. I'd highly recommend this hospital to anyone for surgery. An outstanding experience in trauma. people either love it or hate it because of the hours. I absolutely loved it.
The attending 'preceptor' (general surgeon/trauma surgeon) is great as well. Funny, laid back, will talk to you about anything...including the yankees in the middle of a laproscipic cholecystectomy...just a great guy and a wealth of knowledge. A graduate of Hopkins if i'm not mistaken and did his surgical residency at Cornell.

If anyones got any questions about the surgery rotation at Jamaica...feel free to contact me.

Next...OB/GYN and Peds at Flushing hospital. gidee-up...

holy crap...

my little hobbit...good to hear from you! lol...
how are things going at Kern? I probably won't be doing IM until either my last rotation or second to last. I'd like to end my cores with psych so I can use that 'down time' to study for step II.

hope things are well. tell everyone at Kern I said hi.

???

What do you mean 'disorganized'...any specific examples?
The reason I ask is that I have the option of doing IM at wykcoff or Mt. Vernon...so I have to decided where to do it.

Is it disorganized in the sense that you get out of it what you make? Meaning minimal supervision and your kind of left on you own to do stuff?

I read on the Ross forum that it isn't exactly the best rotation to have.

I did hear Mt. Vernon was pretty good. "Turbo" is there right now as is Kash.

i should have explained better.....its disorganized by the fact you really dont know what you're supposed to be doin for about 2 weeks into it.....Everyone kinda tells you what you need to do but not how to do it, where to find stuff etc. To be honest, if i wanted to leave every day by 1 I could. We are on private right now and our attending is pretty good, he can just be pretty vague sometimes. If you want a lot of study time for step 2 then IM at wyckoff is the way to go
