    Wyckoff rotations

    Hi everyone

I've read a lot of mixed reviews on Wyckoff in Brooklyn. Are all the rotations bad, or just some of them? It seems to be the most easily accessible hospital by train, which is a nice thing to save driving every day.

I would love to hear some input!

alot of the rotations can have vastly different experiences. Both my wife and i got very lucky with attendings and residents so we had great experiences but i know others had horrible experiences

I will say this, I did one rotation at Wyckoff, and I will NEVER do another one there ever again. I did Family Medicine, and in my 6 weeks, I learned nothing other than what I learned from my own reading. You will get NO clinical training, attendings don't take the time to actually teach during rounds, 90% of the residents won't teach either..... There are way too many students...my group had about 8 students which is ridiculous. The gentleman in charge of their medical education dept is incredibly rude and disorganized......I could go on and on.

At the beginning, I thought maybe only FP was like that, but from speaking to other students, I learned that pretty much all the rotations are like that. IM is the same deal, but worse, all of the electives are a joke (i.e: I believe it's Neuro or Radiology that students told me all they did is watch a video for 2 hours a day and then go home....), Peds I've heard mixed reviews, but the majority is bad, same with OB (and with OB, I hear you will NOT get to actually participate in deliveries). Not to mention, I heard that all of the electives were a joke.

With that said, just keep in mind that this is your medical education and this is your only opportunity to learn this stuff before you graduate and become a resident. Depending on your field, you may be losing the ONLY opportunity to learn some crucial things that you need in order to be a good doctor. Some things you can not learn from a book. Especially clinical skills....I found it absolutely ridiculous that they don't allow students to do any procedures. How are you supposed to learn it if you can't touch the patient??? Now again, an elective or two may not hurt you that much, but definately don't do more than that. My advice, don't gamble with your education. DON'T GO TO WYCKOFF.

Well, if I'm scheduled there, do you think I can get out of it by arguing that I'm receiving sub-standard education?

Ha, I wish we could say that about a few professors.

Yes, that's what I did. I said that I refused to go back there because the hospital and staff did not provide the proper education.

wyckoff bought st john's hospital queens and mary immaculate hospital, so u don't have to do all in wyckoff. u can do most of rotations at st john's and MIH. i had a great experience doing obgyn at st john's queens. i admit though, wyckoff is not too good, but the other 2 hospitals are better.

I did peds there back in Jan of this year; it was a pretty decent rotation in my opinion; you get 2 weeks in an outpatient clinic, 1 week in NICU, 2 weeks on floors and 1 week in Peds ER. I learnt the most out of the NICU, floors and Peds ER part. It all depends on what kind of student you are; if you are interested, ask questions and ask them to show you stuff, they will. But otherwise, you can also just glide through it as with any other rotation without learning anything. Peds ER was the best where they let us see the patients before they did. Plus there is a lot of pathology with wyckoff being a busy hospital.

As for Surgery, run! Run as far away as you can!! You can try to learn but I think it's the only rotation in the universe where you can actually forget more than you learn. On the flipside, you will develop a very thick skin dealing with the residents and nurses ...
