The economy remained heavily dependent on sugar, rum, and molasses production through most of the 20th century. The gradual introduction of social and political reforms in the 1940s and 1950s led to complete independence from the UK in 1966. In the 1990s, tourism and manufacturing surpassed the sugar industry in economic importance. Read More...

American University of Barbados (AUB), School of Medicine is located in Barbados, West Indies. It was the initiative, support and cooperation of the Government of Barbados and the Ministry of Education to extend a Charter to establish the first Offshore Medical School on this exotic island in the Caribbean. AUB is recognized and licensed by the Ministry of Education.
The curriculum at the American University of Barbados is structured after the best US and Caribbean Medical Schools. The University provides students with a comprehensive preparation for USMLE Step 1 and Step 2 examinations for licensure in the USA and other mandatory entrance examinations for any other country.
It is where dreams turn to reality and aspirations to success stories. Let us provide the candle that will light your path to the future.
Our endeavor is to emphasize 'student centric' rather than 'teacher centric' training. We view the role of a teacher as a facilitator who helps students 'learn the subject' rather than merely 'teach the subject'.
The aim of the University is not only to produce doctors with a good clinical knowledge, but also to instill in them ethics and values by which they can treat their patients with a human touch.
AUB offers 2 programs of varying duration:
• Comprehensive 5 ½ year MD Program for motivated high school graduates
• 4 year MD Program for B.Sc. graduates
Our curriculum is on par with the best that the US medical schools offer. Our professors are experienced and well qualified to guide you through your course. Our excellent student-teacher ratio ensures that each student gets the individual attention he requires. Practical education is imparted through hospital integrated programs and clinical clerkship rotations.
All this apart, you get to study at Barbados, an exotic Caribbean location, which is scenic and secure.
MissionAUB aspires to produce medical graduates, who are emotionally and culturally sensitive and have a world - class compentence, so that they can be valued and respected healers, and responsible citizens anywhere, they choose to be.
The aim of the University is not only to produce doctors with a good clinical knowledge, but also to instill in them ethics and values by which they can treat their patients with a human touch.
AUB seeks to provide world-class medical education with cuttingedge equipment and pedagogy in an environment that fosters appreciative enquiry, human sensitivity and collaborative research aimed at reducing human suffering and pain.

Welcome to The American University of Barbados, School of Medicine.
At AUB our goal is to prepare our students to be global leaders in all aspects of healthcare delivery. The noble profession of medicine has considerable demands and immeasurable rewards. We are pleased that you have chosen to partner with us in your journey towards the calling of medicine. Our goal is not simply to create "doctors" but medical scholars imbued with a life long desire for knowledge and service.
The leadership of AUB is dedicated to providing the world with a cadre of physicians not just skilled with the most contemporary medical knowledge but compassionate, giving and skilled clinicians treating the human condition. Your choice of AUB sets you upon a path toward the noble profession of medicine within a unique model of medical education we believe second to none.
More than just rendering quality education, we endeavor to see your growth - academically, professionally and socially. These characteristics we believe will soon see AUB evolve as one of the most sought after names in the field of medical education.
Our faculty and staff represent some of the finest to be found in any medical school and we pride ourselves on their commitment to your learning as well as their pre-eminence within their fields.
Our US based medical curriculum both basic science and clinical experiences, is designed specifically to meet the licensing requirements in the United States and other nations around the globe. Our narrow student-faculty ratio allows for a highly personalized interaction between students and professors. Each student is treated as a professional by a caring, empathetic administration and staff. Classes are taught in English by eminently qualified faculty members holding Ph.D. or M.D. degrees with ample teaching experience. We believe this combination will insure success for our students on the United States Medical Licensing Examinations.
Globalization in healthcare is a reality . MRI studies taken in California are read in Mumbai. A physician in Connecticut may "telementor" a surgeon in Brazil. It is our desire to attract a diverse student body who will bring their traditions and experiences in creating a rich, diverse community of scholars that we will have the pleasure to train and educate. You will find the opportunity to experience a myriad of practice and clinical settings that will prepare you for residency and beyond. THe global network of faculty and administration insures that our students have significant options for study and are welcomed into a group of opportunities without boundary. The leadership of AUB continually reviews opportunities to broaden the clinical exposure of our students in the United States and beyond.
We welcome the opportunity and honor to begin the journey with you toward a life of service in providing health to communities around the world.
Welcome!
Kenneth R Alleyne, MD
American University of Barbados presently is chartered to offer 4 year and 5½ year MD programs. The curriculum is based upon the US Medical education standards to ensure a successful academic career and to correlate with licensure guidelines.
The field of Medicine is vast and constantly changing, improving and evolving. Doctors need to keep abreast of these developments always if they are to give their best to their patients. It is a profession in which you can never stop learning. Here, at the American University of Barbados, our motto is to teach you to learn. The first five semesters of formal medical education constitute but a brief introduction to a broad, deep and rapidly changing discipline. The mastery of medical knowledge and technical skills requires lifelong self-education.
Apart from teaching you the theory, we also educate you on how to be able to elicit comprehensive medical history from the patient, carry out humane medical examination and recommend rational investigations. We also try to instill in our students medical ethics, which is the core of any good medical practitioner.
The curriculum is designed to educate and provide students with the knowledge, skills and attitudes necessary to practice medicine. The first 5 semesters concentrate on the basic medical sciences - including anatomy, biochemistry, physiology, microbiology, genetics, pharmacology, pathology, community and behavioral science. Concepts and skills necessary to manage clinical illness, to understand the socio cultural issues in medicine and to be well grounded in the ethical and evidence based medical practice are introduced early and explored in depth as the curriculum progresses. Emphasis is placed on prevention, diagnosis and management of disease states and in the systematic application of these concepts to organ specific diseases on one hand and to use them to promote health on the other.
The curriculum is constantly reviewed to adopt and adapt with the ever increasing body of knowledge and treatment modalities so as to keep our medical graduates abreast with the latest in medicine.
