mosby's more useful for family medicine than internal but physical exam is something you need to master at some point anyway. i recommend using it as a reference during IM and as a primary text during family

for internal medicine, most people like Blueprints Internal Medicine
I liked Step up to Medicine, because it was more detailed and more text-book-like

Harbor Hospital recommends the ACP's "Internal Medicine Essentials"
I don't like the book because it is organized by symptom ("chest pain", "shortness of breath") rather than system ("gastrointestinal diseases").

It's a good idea to go to Barnes and Noble and see what format suits you. A good piece of advice I got from my intern at Harbor was to choose a book that you can finish by the end of the rotation. (ie. don't pick Harrison's as your IM text)

by the end of your IM rotation, you should be able to read plain films and EKGs - my favorite book for EKG is Dubin's Rapid Interpretation of EKGs - recommend you check it out from hospital library. you can finish the book in 3 days if you spend enough time on it. as for plain films, i used squire's fundamentals of radiology - it should also be available at every hospital library (every hospital i rotated at had at least a few copies)
