2010 Residency match

Thank God, I have finally come to this step. I am in Med 4 now. Hi Sree, I don't know if you remember me but I have a question for you.

I hear random things from many people. Someone please shed some light on this.

The word around town is that I MUST TAKE MY STEP 1 by August or I will not match 2010.

Also, there is no way I will make 2010 because they are ridiculous gaps between clinicals and you can't have your own hospital to do your clinicals.

Also, when i apply next year for 2010. What will I have to be finished with in order to QUALIFY JUST TO APPLY?

Thanks!

You need to take Step 1 before you start rotating. So if you take it in August, you can start rotating in October and finish rotating in March (only if you are able to schedule back to back rotations!) and be eligible to apply for the Match. To make the match you have to finish rotating by the third week of April. So, slight gaps between your clinicals won't be too bad, but major gaps will be problematic.

So, the only way you can make the match is if you take the test immediately after leaving Miami - which I don't recommend unless you plan on studying like crazy during your fifth semester.

If you start clinicals October 2008 and want to match 2010 and finish by the 3rd week of April 2010 as required by AUA to graduate, you will need to have no gaps. 48 weeks of cores will take you October 2008 to the following September. If you start electives immediately , the 7 electives. 1 month each starting october 2009 will take you till the end of april 2010. This also means you have no gaps for Step II study and will have to do all prep/studying during rotations. Also, don't forget having your ERAS stuff and AUA match paperwork all done by Sept 2009 or the latest early october 2009. IMO, it will very tough to match 2010 if you start clinicals October 2008.

It's difficult to take Kaplan during fifth because the busy-work they assign you takes up a great deal of time. It's better to review your Basic Sciences on your own during fifth and take Kaplan immediately after, as most of my classmates did.

The ideal solution obviously is for AUA to offer the Kaplan review course or teach Kaplan material.

Can someone take the Step 1 immediately after 5th semester? Isnt it necessary that we finish 2 years of med school before we are eligible to take step 1?

Two academic years. So, yeah you can take it immediately after fifth semester. Most people take some time off to study.
