my experience has been that you need 1st aid for the wards and 1st aid for each of the clerkships. Also try to get the pre-test for each. This will get you through Medicine, But I am also confused as to what to get for some of the other clerkships, like Psychiatry (my current dilemma)

Clerkships
Usually you get get what the clerkship requires at orientation, but talking to some friends of mine that are practicing physicians. They suggested NMS for surgery, also get the swatz if you want to be a surgeon. The scut monkey is invaluable as well as the merck manual. I had a class mate that just finished Psych and he used the kaplan notes. The Sadock is good for Psych and the students behind us will already have it because it is the required text for behavioral. Nelson's for Peds if you want to go into Peds but not sure what to use if you are not interested in doing Peds as a career. Oh yeah make sure to get the latest copy of the wards and boards.

For Family, I used my AUA physical exam notes/Mosby For IM, 'Step up' (Blueprints is an easier read, but less comprehensive IMO) For Ob/Gyn, Blueprints For Peds, Blueprints For Surgery, Surgical Recall and Lawrence-Essentials of General Surgery For Psych, Blueprints For Anesthesia, NMS Anesthesiology For Radiology, Squire's Fundamentals of Radiology I usually read these books cover to cover approximately 1-2 months before starting the rotation rotation - usually 1 topic/chapter a day, which really makes life easier. Don't recommend Harrison's or Schwartz till you are in residency.

I also really like the Case Files series as a supplement. Presents with a clinical sceanrio, hits important points, and guides you through what you should have noticed in the scenario to get the Dx. Then explains and hits all the pertinent info on the topic. Can make you look really good on the wards by a quick review and easy to read if you have down time during your day. This is purely a supplement but really good IMO.
