I'm blogging about visiting Chinese medical universities this week

I got around the great firewall of China, so I'm able to post updates daily. I will be visiting Fudan, Tongji, Zhejiang, Huazhong, Wuhan, Guangzhou, and Sun-Yat-Sen (maybe), all this week. Enjoy, and let me know if you have questions. If you attend any of these universities, let's meet up!

I was going to live in an apartment no matter what. I probably should have asked though, for you guys to know. Dorms suck, even if they're nice.

But, if you're from a western country, just count on it sucking. China's standard of living is way lower. You have to spend money to get what you're used to.

I got this comment on my blog: "Looks like they cant find any Chinese professors who speak english. Also, if you dont like indian-english (there is no such thing btw), try to into med school in america..but looks like thats a long shot for you." - Anonymous

Having finished a bachelors degree at Purdue University, I can tell you that it's normal to study on your own. My thought is that going to a Chinese university would not be any different. As long as the information is provided in the notes (powerpoint) and/or in the textbook, it's your responsibility to learn it. They shouldn't have to spoon-feed it to you.

The comment sounds like it came from a juvenille, but I'll entertain it by responding. The general consensus from what I've heard about Chinese professors is that 60% of the instruction is good. You don't come here strictly for an English medium, but because you want to be in China. All the information is provided, and the onus is on you to learn... But that's how it is in the States too. As to Indian-English... Have you ever met Indian people? They teach English in India, but it's their own version. Hence, Indian-English. It really is a thing, go meet some people from other parts of the world. As to this: "try to [get] into med school in america, but looks like thats a long shot for you." That's interesting, what did you mean by that? If you're referring to my lack of medical prerequisites due to me just having a degree in finance, you are absolutely right. It's not a long shot, it would be a zero possibility. But, you probably don't even know how it works here. But, like I mentioned, I wasn't even considering Southern Medical University, I was just visiting a friend, so the language thing would be non-factor anyway. I'll just chalk it up to that person being a troll.

That's unfortunate. The internet does make you think about the quality of people there is in the world. Not surprised though from rude comment, there are a few of those cutthroat people in the pre-med community that doesn't understand the whole picture. Assuming person is probably a pre-med if you posted blogs on ValueMD along with some other medical school sites such as Student Doctor Network.

It has nothing to do with being pre-med or cutthroat. It's just juvenile and mainly ignorant, which is expected since mostly everyone lurking on this forum is in high school, looking to go straight into medical school. That's the biggest complaint coming from Americans studying in China. Their classmates lack the maturity to become doctors, and it scares the crap out of them that they'll actually treat people. But, that's how it works around the rest of the world, medical school is an undergraduate program.

I have to say though, if you want no business learning the Chinese language and culture, don't apply to China. I've heard too many people (from many countries) complain about kids coming from other countries and wanting no business learning the language or culture (mainly Indian students from India), and treat their host country like crap by trashing the dorms and throwing trash everywhere outside the buildings. It pisses a lot of the Chinese students off and some altercations have happened where some Indian students have been attacked.

The police here are more Hammurabian, and if you do something bad, and people beat the pooh pooh out of you for it, they will only arrest you and not the people who beat the living tar out of you. They will not protect you if you come here and risk the safety of others. Some Indian students were throwing glass bottles off their balcony, it hit someone, and Chinese students rushed up the dorm and beat the crap out of the Indian students. In America, everyone would have been arrested, but not here. Just the antagonists, which is probably how it should be.

Doesn't mean you should be scared to come here, just don't come to a foreign country and disrespect people. Some Mauritius students were at a club, and a Chinese guy was pick-pocketing people's cell phones. He got caught, and the Mauritius students beat the living crap out of him. The police came, told them good job for catching him, and hauled him off to jail. The point is, is that there's leeway for vigilante justice. If you mess with the bull, you get the horns. Don't come to China and disrespect people.

Congratulations guys. Start learning Chinese. Life will be extremely difficult for you if you don't have a basic understanding of the language, especially in a smaller city like Hangzhou, where nothing is in English.
