510 points hi everyone,
so has anyone applied to zhejiang university for 2012 entry?
514 points China's great so far. Really smoggy/foggy, but other than that, it's been a hoot. My Chinese is so abysmal that half the people don't understand what I'm saying, which makes getting around harder. You have to get your destination written down for the taxi drivers. One thing I learned today: avoid the gypsy taxi drivers. Legitimate taxi's have a phone number painted on the side of the car, they will not cheat you. The taxis without the phone number on the side of the car will take you on such a long detour that your 30 yuan trip, turned into 300 yuan.
I don't speak from experience, but this is what an ex-pat at the bar told me today (who's been living here for the past year). So, take it with a grain of salt. On the plus side, the food is delicious, cheap, and plentiful. Tomorrow, I will be visiting Fudan.
511 points well seems like your having fun......
Good luck on your trip and keep us updated
510 points Is it just me or can't anyone access ZU's online application site?

510 points Are there any UK based students starting at ZJU in september?
And although Chinese cuisine does contain a lot of meat, it is fairly easy to get vegetarian dishes too from my past experience.

511 points Hi all! I just joined, thinking of enrolling for ZJU next year (I actually already have a degree, this will be my second if I proceed with it). I'll be considered a non-trad.
Sorry, I just have to say: I have to agree with shui3000 on an earlier post. DO NOT USE AGENTS. I've lived in China before and there are enough people willing to help you out for FREE. If you don't know how to find someone, approach a teacher and the teacher will hook you up with a language partner. If you need help opening a bank account, buying a phone card, etc. you can ask any international student who seems friendly and willing to help (trust me, there are lots). You can even ask the teachers for help.
I don't see why anyone would want to pay $2000 for help around the area when you can get that type of help for free (sorry guys, just my personal opinion through personal experience!).
Anyway, I'm not looking for any trouble here...I'm just trying to save people from spending anything unnecessary.
512 points Hi there...I also applied without an agent and reading some posts in this site, i got really worried...but your info gives me back some courage!!
Are you sure about "approach a teacher and the teacher will hook you up with a language partner.?" I'm really considering it as a good option.
520 points Some teachers MAY assist but, once landed and having arrived at the university of your choice, one may find that the foreign affairs dept, or another foreign or local student might put their hand up to help. Other uni's might also have a more formalised system in place where student buddies are assigned to each new student to facilitate the new students transition. The being said though, there are often plenty of local students who are willing to help out, as many want to practise or improve their oral English skills.
