Facing a doctor shortage, India will recognize Foreign medical degrees

Facing a Doctor Shortage, India Will Recognize Foreign Medical Degrees - Chronicle.com

Facing a Doctor Shortage, India Will Recognize Foreign Medical Degrees

To combat a severe shortage of doctors and in a move to attract back Indian doctors settled abroad, the Indian government has decided to recognize graduate medical degrees from Britain, the United States, Canada, Australia, and New Zealand, provided they are recognized in the respective countries.
Until now, doctors with an undergraduate degree from India but a graduate degree from another country were not allowed to practice in India. Indian doctors with graduate degrees from the approved countries will now be allowed to practice in India at any public or private hospital. They can also be recruited to teach undergraduates in any medical college, according to a statement issued by the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare.
The doctor-per-person ratio (including practitioners of Western medicine, homeopathy, and Indian systems of medicine) is 1 to 870, according to the Indian government. Not including practitioners of non-Western medicine, that ratio increases to 1 to 1,634. In rural India 67 percent of enrolled doctors do not report for duty, according to the government.
“It is clear from the above statistics that the country is in dire need of medical specialists to cater to the increasing demands of public health care in rural and urban areas,” the health ministry said in its statement. “Vast stretches of the countryside are not well equipped with health facilities, doctors and para-medical staff, creating serious imbalances in the health sector.”
Increasing Indian medical-school enrollments and the number of medical specialists cannot be achieved immediately, the ministry said, adding there are many Indian citizens with foreign medical degrees living abroad who are willing to return to India.

Great! Hopefully, there will now be a massive exodus of US medical graduates applying for residencies in India.....that will in turn open the door for FMG's to get a residency in the US.

Money isn't everything my friend. When I become a doctor, Insha'Allah, I'd much rather prefer to practice in India vs. U.S.. And who are you to say that "the life the ppl, everything is better there [America]"? Our miserable lives in America are nothing compared to the beautiful lives of the people back in India. True, we may have more money than them, but they, in India, have much much more personal satisfaction and sukoon (peace) in their lives.

No one is denying the absolute fact that we have to leave this world one day, so whats the point in wasting/ruining your life (both this earthly life and the real life to come (the afterlife)) by running after money. Go to or stay in India, earn a descent respectable amount of money, and more importantly obtain countless dua'as from the poor and destitute over there. Thats teh real profit my friend.

Salam Alaikum

Some indians want to go back to India after being in america for some time. They make and save money in america and go back to india, and lead nice life styles. So some people may be tempted to go back settle down and start a practice in india. If you open a practice in india and advertise that you are educated in america, you may get good buisness.

First of all i wasnt talking to u, and i have been to both India and the US, and it is my personal opinion, i am entitled to freedom of speech and i am just voicing out MY opinion. Im not insulting you personally here so chill out. And just because India will have a demand for doctors that doesnt mean it will be any easier to get a residency in the US. Not ALL Indian doctors will prefer to settle in India and there are sooo many of them that even if half go back to India, there will still be a good number flooding the US plus there are other people from all over the world applying in the US. And were talking about RESIDENCY here...many young doctors go to the US to train even if eventually they end up going back to their home country. And if you feel you will be happier in India then good for you, you are entitled to your opinion just as I am to mine. And yes money is not everything, but thats just one of the factors i mentioned (dont get all cheezy and jump into the whole after life issue) how dare you label your post desire for $$, you dont even know me, i also said the life and people in the US are better FOR ME...now dont go pouncing on me again...this is MY OPINION...thats why its called an OPINION because it is not a FACT and DIFF PEOPLE HAVE DIFF OPINIONS...u say youre a doctor? so im assuming you are definitely atleast 5 years older than me...you earned an MD/MBBS but you dont know what its like to speak politely...that too with someone you dont know
