For current students...what are the 1st semester exams like? What is a mini? Are they all cumulative? What's the hardest class for the first semester and how good are the class notes?
you can see some old RETIRED minis here

hardest depends on you, I thought worst would be Histo. A lot say genetics is because people tend to ignore it because its not weight as heavly(sp?) and everyone complains about biochem.
None are cumulative, although the local final, mini 3 could have an extra few questions.
the shelf exams are cumulative though.
a mini is just a test we have every 4 weeks or so. Its 1 test that is seperated into subjects. About 120 questions total with about 2.5 hours to take it in.
1st semester break down changed a lot. In 2nd, its pretty much 40 questions per subject (anatomy, physio and neuro).

How is your GPA calculated then? By the scores on the minis? Do the professors prepare you for the minis and give you like a breakdown of what to study?

Your GPA is calculated just like in any other school that I know of. Each class defines a particular weight to the exam (15% for example). At the end of the semester, they averager all your grades together to get your raw score. Then comes the "adjustement" which is the different part and more easily understood once you read it yourself in the student handbook. Anyways, then they add several points to your score and e-mail it out to you.
The breakdown is everything you have studied over the last month. Some professors give you more detail than that, some don't.
Hope that helps,
