Hello,
I have recently been accepted for pre-med 1 for the may semester. I would love to get to know some of you guys that are going in the same time. I have so many questions regarding what to take with me, how to arrange transportation to the island and other general qustions.
Any MUA students would like to offer some advice?
Please help.

Hi neesy, Congratulations. I had seen your posts earlier as well. I am also seeking admission for Premed1. I am very nervous about the whole process. Could you please share your Gpa / or clinical experience with me so I can get an idea about my chances but its still fully upto your discretion to share this information. If you want, you can pm me to keep it private.
I wish you Good luck for future and congrats once again.

Hey Neesy, thanks for starting this post, I was about to do the same this weekend if no one else had by that time. My name is Sandeep and I'm from Kansas City, KS, 24 y/o, and I have also been admitted to the pre med I program at MUA starting in May '06. Just sent in my deposit in today in fact. Hope this forum fills up a little before we get down there! I'll try to post every now and then! Good luck to everyone applying and already on the island/clincals.

Btw, I found the MUA student government website to be a great resource...they have all the sylabi (sp?), class schedules, dorm pics, and a list of stuff to bring and not to bring. The website's address I believe is http://www.sgamua.com
Hope this Helps!

I will also be joining the rest of you in Pre-med I this coming May. Im mixed between excited and nervous. Im 23 with a B.B.A. in Economics, this is going to be a career change for me. It was tough leaving a fortune 500 company, but in the end I know i will be doing something that is much more rewarding.
Im interested in maybe finding a place off campus, and looking into getter a car or scooter. If anyone has some leads, please do share. Look forward to meeting you all in May.

Congrats to all of you. I would recommend reading all the various posts here about cars, apartments, what to bring and what not to bring. Read all the info on MUA's website and the SGA's website. Within all of that you will find just about every kernel of info that you will need and will be able to make some informed decisions before coming down. Best of luck to you all and congrats once again.

Hey,
I am considering attending MUA. I got in..I just have to decide to accept MUA. So I thought I might introduce myself. :bored: I'm from NJ, I've completed a B.A. I'm 24, looking for a career change. Medicine has always been on my mind...but due to circumstances at the time, I ended up completing a BA. Anyway, if I do decide to come to MUA - I look forward to meeting you all. I'd love to hear about you guys.
Question: Do all of you have a science background? Or are the pre-med courses going to teach from introductory level?
Thanks,
-aa

Hi,
Congrats on being accepted to MUA.
You really don't need much science background and I am sure you have some highschool science, i.e, you know what Na and Cl symbols mean. I sure didn't have any background (engineering) when I started four years ago. I also started with pre-med and it helped me a lot. Lots of ppl do premed and waste the 8 months they are on the island. Spend this time wisely and you will do extremely well.
goodluck

i'll see you down there bright n early:-)
i'm going down a few days early, setup shop early n enjoy the proverbial quiet before the storm;-)
26, PA/NY right now, BAs in mgt, mkt, and psy. NO chem/bio classes at all, not even in high school (moved to US from UK). i did a LOT of volunteer work and read a lot on my own time.
take care to all, and to all a good night!
(PM or Yahoo message if you're looking for a roomy)

Thank those who PMed me about various stuff, be it computer related, housing qu's or roomy info!
good to know this class can communicate.
ppl, we're going to a great school to learn the art of the most respected profession ever, however it is a beautiful island and we can have some social life!
some people want to know more about their class, which makes sense, so I'm going to ASK those who haven't said hi to all to speak up, please!
there are a LOT more pre-meds startng may, majority of them probably do not know about this website though. the premed class size is somehow still unknown???
Potworks is full right now, and the med class is about 80 i've heard (supposed to be 50?). Rawlins has only room for 80, is over half full already, so won't be enough.
they're going to have to move some of us elsewhere. i've called gardner so many times, the secretary & the head admin guy (u all know him) know me by voice! could someone please find out what is going on? i'll call monday if noone else does.
anyways, i'm sure there are some very cool (fun&interesting) people in our class. as we're gonna be in the same classes & on a teeny tiny island, we might as well start the friendships now!
any questions, just ask the class here, or other threads that are more relevant/specific.
thanks guys, see you in 32 days!

wow! gone 5 hours, kneedeep in computer entrails, n got 3 PMs about housing situation. thanks guys!
for everyone's edification - some people (new students, be it med or premed) will, most likely, have to get housing not in the dorms.
do not be alarmed/shocked, this is a great school and the dorms can only hold about 160 (80/dorm right!?), so it's natural evolution.
first come, first serve is what most of us are thinking at this point.
NB: it is their responsibility to find housing for 1st semester students - part of their rules, so they have to do the legwork! the expense & convenience of it may change (but expense probably won't as it's on paper how much the rates are), but it will be worked out!
no one will sleep with the monkeys!;-P
ok, i guess some people are shy/quiet n would rather PM me to blast it out, that's coo! all i ask is not to be asked for the final answer! i don't know everything, and am just trying to help! however, i don't/can't lie and have good judgement, so usually am right (it's a curse!).
actually helpin 2 people applyin for september - contacted me via valuemd! any hints/suggestions/"lines" even? i have a very different style of writing/thinking, so i welcome others' opinions openly!
thanks in advance ppl, "let the good times roll!"

How much does the dorm situation change every semester? I ask this because my friend and I are anticipating to start this sept of 2006. Just wondering. .
Thanks

lst semester the class was larger than expected.
this semester (may) it is even larger supposedly. (premed is unknow still)
no word from anyone else, so calling dorm manager & housing coordinator on monday.

forget all the previous posts re the housing situation, just talked w/ gardner head guy, housing coordinator & dorm manager today (yes i get free long distance).
the scoop (as you hip ppls say) is thus:
january, they had a much larger class then anticipated. they have to predict how many people will come and start classes (i say it that way as ppl (be it one even) have come to nevis, and left).
they grant acceptance to more people then actually accept, of course, however, many who accept also accept at other places, so do not arrive. as it is a business (asin anything facet of life nowadays), they have to try and make the number of the actual class 50 or above.
may is the slowest semester, but the numbers applying are higher then last year, so it's getting harder for them (which makes sense).
the housing should not be affected! all premeds and meds should be allowed in the dorms, no "alternative housing."
i apologise if i worried anyone or have somehow blemished the efficiency/appearance of MUA (but i don't think i did - my stupidity was in believing a few rumours and not checking them first before telling others).
a caveat for sept and beyond appliers (yes i make up my own words! haha!), the recent acceptance of NY (which was very smooth btw, showing the notice paid to MUA is rising tremendously!) and the increasing applicants per semester will mean the requirements for entry to MUA will keep increasing. GPA, MCAT, involvement, acuity, volunteerism, etc will be closer scrutined.
Also, Sept is the the hardest semester to get into anyway (simple stats - i.e. the largest # of applicants).
sorry May ppl, big tangent on that one, but not gonna post that in the sept thread (i'm allowed to be lazy, the new law says so).
oh, a reminder for all new students - send Gardner ur immunization forms, police clearance(s), and dorm form (most ppl should've done that by now tho), AND itinerary. maybe they'll meet us at the airport??
k,
26 more days n i'm down in the sun.
hardest decision right now: how many flipflops to take...:-P

Hey Thanks :) for getting it clarified. Just a quick question. I didnt understand what you meant by Free long distance. Do all students in Dorms get free long distance for calling US/Canada? Again, Just wondering!!!
drdj5alive
03-29-2006, 05:43 PM
sorry, i meant free long distance from the US to nevis.
majority of mobile carriers (verizon & cingular definately), depending on ur phone plan (regional, nationwide, statewide, etc), will let you call nevis for free (no international rates apply). it counts as PR (puerto rico) somehow.
check w/ ur carrier before making calls tho.
the dorms have a phone line as far as i know. we do pay for phone on a per semester rate in the dorms. i doubt they will have free LD in the dorms, as it'd be too expensive for them. i have extra mics (computer, .5mm jacks) for anyone intested. skype, msnm, ym, aim, all are free & the sound quality is great - except to japan! :-( the phone systems is diff there:-(

Hello,
So how are you feeling about going to the island?
Have you made any preparationsas yet ...books,shipment, dorm, supplies to take etc.
I feel as if I'm never going to be prepared. Anyway, hope to see you.

45+ premed1s (estimated, as it's never actually finalized) starting in a few weeks, yet only a 6-8 have said anything!
granted 15-30% (roughly) of students (varies by semester) actually join VMD (as majority never even heard of it) before initially going to the island, but 6-8 is still a low number!
also, y'all are quiet!
maybe we should get a 'social committee' formed:rolleyes:
i'm guessin majority of y'all are old enough to drink, so a lil pre-hell party may be in order:cool:

called sharon L. at nevis, number's in the packet they sent - can't post it here, sorry
kinda annoyin talkin to thm today cos the guy (cl****n) is unbending on room selection, said he never heard of a 10% discount for 1st semester students (while current/past students said he does/did), and said we'd HAVE to bounce after our 1st semester (to make room for the other classes).
that feelin of "what the heck am i gettin in for" is back...

I called the island today and the guy taking care of the dorms told me that he couldn't find my name on the list of the incoming students. Also, it was too late to call gardner and verify the status.
When did you send your questionnaire to gardner?.. so I can compare the time frame.
Thanks.

3rd week of february, i think
but i called colleen at gardner about it (wanted to add something - preference for something i think - but that never worked out...), so she made sure it was good. i call her a lot actually, maybe just to make sure i gon't get whacked upon arrival, or maybe i could just use more friends - i'm a sad & lonely man:(
if that's the case abkoussih, call sharon L on the island - she knows who's with who, where, & will give u that person's name, phone number & email, if you ask. he (dorm managr) can tell u about the room, room number & will take ur money with a smile...;)
good luck & will be waitin for u by the beach...
[yes, i am in a smily mood - cos i finished packing... for now. 2 days to go, so i can relax with my japanese apricot wine Shin Lu Chu - for those lucky enough to have heard of this liquid gem, it is awesome!)

Have a good trip and I will see you soon.

Hey there! I am also starting in the pre med 1 in May '06. I have lived down here since March 14 and I have my own apartment. My finacee is going into Med 2 so that is why I came so early. One thing that I reccomend is come down EARLY! Get used to the life and slow pace. Learn about the HAs and how to get to town and back..
I love it down here!! If anyone has any questions please feel free to ask!! Oh yeah!
GET A BATTERY BACK UP!!! The power goes out here almost daily. The dorms does have generators but if you don't live in the dorms generators are not an option. Yesterday the power was out for over 6 hours...fun fun!!

Hello everyone,
I too will be starting pre-med in May. I'm 26 from Toronto and looking forward to getting this started. I finally received the internet this week (pretty pricey, but so is everything else). Oh yeah, power outages are pretty frequent so a backup is definitely needed. Looking forward to meet my new classmates.
P.S. I'm looking for a roomate. PM me if your interested. What's up Neesy?
