WHen is a good time to fly down?
How many days do I need to get adjusted/prepared/settled and when will the dorms be available for the new students?
ALSO:
from SXM (st .maarten) should I fly using winair or take the ferry? (which is cheaper?)
thank you!

From what I hear the ferry is probably the better option if you are concerned about price. Also, many have told me to take the ferry if you have a lot of cargo. Plus, the ferry ride options sounds more fun as it is more "scenic."
Good luck!
See you in September.

The ferry is like 40 USD or 45. Plus departure fee and then you pay for extra bags if you have them. The ride on the ferry was fine. Might get a little wet but just sit inside. The give you free drinks. I hear free beer as well, and from looking at the previous posts, there is a competition over who is able to consume more beer in the hour to hour and a half ride....do a search on it. Anyway, it is my understanding that if the water is rough, which it is very rough now, the ferry doesn't leave sxm. Same goes for the cargo ships, so your things may be delayed.
As for arrival, I arrived 3 days early. That should be plenty of time. You may want to come a little earlier if you are going to fly because I know that getting on the island during that time is tough. You should book your flight from SXM asap. I know just to get off of the island for break, people are purchasing their tickets now. And that is if they haven't already. Which means they are also purchasing their return tickets. The flights gost about 80 USD one way. Thats including all of the extra charges, insurance, etc... I like the ferry, but I want to fly out this time so I bought from winair. I hear the flight is amazing, esp. the landing on the island. Runway is slightly longer than the length of the plane...hehe.
Hope this helps.
Good luck.

Hmmm could be fun to get a group of May students together to plan on taking the ferry as a group. Good way to get to know your classmates... having a freshman drinking contest  . Though I do admit I'm the tallest lightweight you're ever likely to encounter. Well there's another bonding experience, carrying the drunk giant up the steap narrow road to campus, the only thing that'd make it better is if it happened to be raining at the same time!
All kidding aside, I do think it'd be fun to try and get a small group of May students together who'd be interested in riding the ferry as a group. Anyone else interested?

Sounds good, I'm trying to book my flights this week and will keep everyone updated as to how things are looking. I think getting a group together Friday the 28th to take the ferry together would be awesome.
I'm getting more and more excited as the time creaps closer, every bit of research that I do makes me more sure that I've made the right decision, and on these boards I've been able to meet some very cool people who I can't wait to meet in person on the island.
See you all in May!

I have taken the ferry a few times to Saba. If you do get seasick, you may want to pre-medicate. I have seen a few people turn quite green on the trip and pass out in exhaustion from vomiting as the boat continues to go up and down for the 1 hour and 15 minute or so ride. If you do not get seasick, the ferry is a lot of fun.
