IS SABA safe for girls, if they are really attractive? or even not much so? Any crazy people there? Or is it just the same as the States?

It is very safe. But that being said, there have been a couple of incidents when I was there. 1 was a case of a female student being watched through a window, and the second was a female who was woken up in the middle of the night with someone on top of her, and she bit him and threw him off of her and ran. Not to say that this is common, cause it isnt (2 incidents in 2 years is pretty good), but please use your common sense no matter where you end up!!! Lock your doors, and windows and try to live near people and not in the middle of nowhere!

Saba for the most part is safe. Yes there are the occasional B&E, occasional female student being harrased by locals. To be safe in the night always walk with a fellow student or students. Note if you show guts when you are being harrased you will generally be left alone in the future as word gets around fast.

One of the curses of being hot is that you never feel safe. Gosh, I feel so....unsafe. G

okay are you guys kidding me? i cannot stop laughing at this...i don't know if it is because of the very attractive bit or the question in general...
first of all, BE MODEST in your choice of clothes if you are very worried about this. secondly, BE SMART and travel with others especially when it is dark. keep your wits about you at all times. i think that this is just common sense. or am i wrong?
Hey People!
Not to put a damper on the fun, but when I was a fifth semester student on the island in June, 2003, one of my classmates and good friends woke up in her apartment with a rapist on top of her holding a knife to her neck. There were many comments on this on the thread noted in the title of this post. Here is the text from one of the posters:
......."Hello Everyone,
In order to put an end to the speculations, rumors, and crude jokes we have seen here over the last few days, we are submitting this post. We are students and spouses of students on the island, and are willing to answer any questions to current or former students specific to life on Saba to prove this. To preserve the integrity of our academic and medical careers, we will remain anonymous. Please trust that the information we share is accurate and comes from first or second-hand accounts from people involved in the situation. We are posting here to prevent the administration, naïve posters on this forum, and a few local citizens from sweeping this under the rug in order to create a false sense of security on the island.
Let us begin by stating that Saba is a safe place to live. Most people never lock their doors, and always leave their car keys in the ignition. It is a beautiful island, with an almost parent-child relationship existing between many students and their landlords. On the whole, students and permanent Saban residents get along well, and realize the importance and value of the symbiotic relationship in which they exist. Until this Monday night, any female student you would have asked would have told you how safe she felt jogging at night or living alone.
Because of the failure of the Saba Police Department to act promptly and decisively, as well as the “underwhelming” response by members of the school’s administration, this travesty has created an air of suspicion and fear on the island among students and residents. In particular, we would like to point out that this environment is being provoked by members of the University administration down playing and not reacting strongly to this incident. In fact, in today’s Herald, (the daily paper of the Netherlands-Antilles)
PS: I am pretty sure that the Dean of Students mentioned in the letter is no longer with the school.

wow that's wack. seriously.
With all due respect to the moderators of this forum, when editing for content, please do not remove so much of the message that its meaning is lost. If the letter I pasted onto my post was edited for names, it could easily have been done without amputating an entire limb of the letter! Be reasonable and use some common sense next time!
Thanks,
Josh

Actually, usually we (mods) take out the whole messege as its not the responsibility of the moderators to cherry pick names out of posts which users should not have left in. Frankly we dont have the time or inclination.
Common sense, which you properly value, can tell you why.
It was actually my attempt at a courtesy for leaving a bulk of the content in. The reasonable bit came with the fact that we never give warnings for these sorts of posts though they are against terms of use. (exception being rare events where someone is willfully trying to smear another user etc). We undersgtand that no harm is typically meant and while we have to keep the forum in compliance with the tos, we prefer to keep to the spirit of rather than the letter of it (though people like to complain if we take either approach but there you go).
However to prevent the appearence of lack of common sense or unreasonableness that can clearly come with a partially edited post, we, the mods, shall hithertofore delete the whole messege and slap on warnings like there is no tomorrow for the tos violation. One for each name and twice on tuesdays. Ok will just delete the article.
Dear Stephew,
The last thing I would want to do is be disrespectful to you, as I have come to appreciate your intelligent and witty posts over the years. You do an excellent job in reigning in the silliness when it is needed. My confusion and frustration about this particular situation stemmed from the fact that all I did was cut and past from this very website, neither adding nor subtracting any thing from the original post. Perhaps the name should have been removed over two years ago when it was posted!? I feel the mods "threw out the baby with the bath water" in this instance.
The topic of safety stood out to me in the midst of so many repeated topics and similar threads that have been beaten into the ground ad nauseum, I was interested to provide information that may actually affect one's decision about whether or not to go to Saba. As someone who lived on Saba with his family for two years, I felt that the last paragraph of the letter had some insights about the local police dept. and politics that would be helpful to students who are seriously concerned. Of course, I understand that the mods don't necessarily have time to sort through each letter for names, and avoiding slander clearly an important thing to keep in mind. In the future, I will be more cautious.
All this being said, you are still my favorite radiologist and this forum, as well as the future/current students using it benefit greatly from your input.
Thank you,
Josh

you are lost in the job description which stephew fills. that is, in part, enforce the TOS of valuemd. Stephew does not have too, nor should have to go through little bit by little bit to make what you said compliant. this is far too time consuming for a volunteer position. rather what should have occured is your initial compliance with TOS and this incident would never have occured. have a nice day.
oh, and stephew is not a radiologist, but rather a radition oncologist resident. quite striking differences to the point.

you're an internist right teratos????... thought i recalled seeing that somewhere....
anyway, you all do a fine job. have a beer on me if you're ever to SABA. just go to swinging doors and put it on Nate's tab.
I apologize for any insult implied by confusing her specialty. Radiation Oncology, and I am sure an absolutely excellent one.
Again, for cooldreams' benefit and-typing-very-slowly: In the interest of shedding light on the issue of rape in the Caribbean and how things are handled differently than in the States or Canada, I cut and pasted exactly what was posted previously. The content was ALREADY on the forum! Therefore, I was not breaking, nor have I ever broken TOS! I was simply pointing out to current viewers a message that was posted two years ago! In fact, the same message is still right there back in June of 2004 - administrator's full typed name intact - as I write.
Thank you and this hatchet is buried.
