I was wondering about the internet situation in SABA...
From what I gather it is dial up...
can anyone shed some light on the cost and fees associated with having internet at home.
Including telephone fees, monthly fees and minute fees.
Also who is the provider? and what is there website?
thank you,
Rui

Hey,
To have internet you need a phone line which will cost:
Deposit - $500.00 US
Installation - $125.00 US
Monthly Fee for Phone - $11 US ($20Fls) for local or $17 US ($30Fls) for internation package.
Monthly Internet Service - $11 US ($20Fls)
Connection fee - 11cents
Minute Fee - 3 cents
Hope that helps. Internet is reliable at home and for the first time in a long time it is reliable at the library as well.
Cheers

The phone company is Saba Tel (no surprise) and they also deal with the dial up internet. It is not a company you can just look up or converse with online.
I don't really see any way to set it up ahead of time, especially if you are not living in the dorms.
If you are living in the dorms, they can have the phone set up in your room in under a week and the internet thing is a joke (they'll take care of your computer on the spot). Until then, just use the library.
To make it quicker, make sure you have the money on you when you arrive and be the first one there.

Is the internet at the library a fast satellite connection? Or is it some kind of cable / DSL connection? I'm assuming it's faster than dial-up. Are there any plans for a wireless network for students to use?

I'm not sure but I think I remember something to the effect of the library having a satellite(?) connection which I would assume would be faster than dial-up...

It is a satellite connection that they have just hooked up... it's replaced the old system. They're still working out the bugs in the system but when it's connected it's pretty fast. People are upset and cranky right now regarding this issue but things are getting better.
