man oh man, i'm tired of reading these posts. for the last time: with stats like that, just take the friggen mcat and apply to u.s. med schools, you have a GREAT chance. don't go foreign if you don't have to. it is as simple as that. seriously, don't waste your time applying to foreign schools with those stats.

Absolutely! Write the MCAT and go to US. You will regret if you know what offshore med schools are like and how many hurtles you have to overcome compare to the State's schools...

On the other hand, you will never have problem with getting into Saba...Think wise before you decide!

Yeah, take the MCAT. You may be too late to apply for Sept now anyway. There's plenty of time to buff up for the MCAT (I recommend the Audio Osmosis products), and who knows, you might do very well.

In the mean time, if you must, just apply to Saba. Sorry to sound like another hard *** here but the students don't know what the current stats are at all. The administration doesn't tell us, and frankly most of us are too fing busy to care.

Dude there are 2 possible reasons why your GPA is so high, either you went to a school which inflates your grades, in which case yes, my analysis tells me you have a 91.3pi over 3% chance of getting in if you send your application when the 3rd moon of Jupiter is alligned with pluto, which is at 2:35 PM tomorrow. Option 2, you actually are smart and you earned your marks (this is the option I favor), in which case, you SHOULD write the MCAT because there is no reason why you shouldn't do well and not get in stateside.

I agree with the rest. Don't fear the MCAT. It's not that hard, especially if your 3.89 is meaningful.

Go to a US school. You'll get better support there and have a much easier time matching for residency so long as you do your part.

The Caribbean is for students with massive holes in their application (averaging a 2.0 my 3rd year undergrad with multiple C's, a D, and an F is mine) that prevent them from getting any interviews.

I am exploring my option to apply to a good Medical School in Carribean or any other Med School.

I have some serious questions.

i) I have noticed that e-mail addresses of the faculty are missing from the Saba website. Does Saba discourage prospective students to contact faculty member directly?

http://www.saba.edu/home_faculty.php

Saba Webbsite has student handbook on their website
http://www.saba.edu/admissions_handbook.php

i) What is the drop-out rate from Saba?
ii) What is percentage of Students who successfully complete Basic Science course in 5 semesters? Is it 60% , 70% or Higher?
iii) Can I find the faculty evaluation of Saba on www.myprofessor.com (http://www.myprofessor.com)?

Isn't WI the abbreviation for the State of West Indies?

This thread is kinda all over the place, but let me throw in my two cents.

-- If you have good grades, and relevant experience, take the MCAT and apply to US schools first. I'm happy I went to Saba and would do it again in a heartbeat, but I would drop everything if I was offered a seat in a US school.

--I don't think Saba actively discourages or encourages prospective applicants to contact professors directly. Let me ask though - when you applied to your undergraduate college, did you go to its website and contact members of its teaching staff? I'll bet you probably just called and asked for a catalog and talked to someone in the admissions office who pointed you in the right direction. Do the same here. Call Gardner. Get a catalog. Ask them for contacts. They are usually very good about helping potential applicants (they helped me a lot).

--drop out rate - hmmmm.... I always tried to figure this myself. Here goes. Out of my starting class of about 52:

5 people dropped out for academic or personal reasons within the first 2 semesters

10 people took an extra semester to graduate basic sciences - either due to course failure or just taking a semester off

2 other people have taken longer than an extra semester (and I really don't know their status at this moment)

We picked up 11 more people in our class graduation from previous semesters

As for clinicals - I know two of my classmates transferred to another school for personal reasons (not academic, they were both strong students).

The rest of us are in clinicals right now and on track to match no later than about 2007.

--your guess is as good as mine for "my professor". Students do evaluate the faculty at the end of each semester and it appears that the evaluations do have an impact on faculty. As for the quality of faculty, I feel it is generally pretty good. There are of course highs and lows aroud the mean.

--as far as I know there is no state (or country) of the West Indies. WI is the abbreviation for Wisconsin. Of course, you probably already knew that and are just pulling our leg with your colby stained hand.

Best of Luck!

Researching Guy: Do you want me to make the same mistakes that I made when I was an undergraduate student? I think I am a little wiser and would pick my school with a little but more CARE. I just could not believe that you would give me a fluffy answer like that. I am making a commitment to come to a small Island. If It is not for scenary or entertainment that it should offer me something more. I am demanding information and answers to my questions.
Regards,
Mark

I will be a little bit more careful this time since I am a little bit wiser ( I guess). I don't think you would want me to make the same mistakes that I made as an undergrad. I am doing my due dliligence and trying to find specific information. According to you numbers the drop-out rate ( and whateve ryou want to call it ) is around 33%. I am looking for trends in your data (as you study in Epidemiology and pay attention to sample size and population representation. Have you ???:) ). Specific example do not tell us an trends. Bottom line, the info on the website is incomplete. I need objective answers. Please help

Dear Kerr,

Please note that this is not the official Saba website, nor is this the end-all, be-all information source for info on SUSM. Those of us who come here to answer questions and give our opinion do so of our own volition and in spite of busy schedules.

If you are truly doing your due diligence you should get in touch with the source. Call Gardner. Call Saba. Visit Saba (like many of us did before we committed). Get in touch with practicing graduates (their names are on the website). Call the California Med Board and ask them what they think of Saba.

Best of Luck!

PS - I can't say much about trends, but, when I studied math, 5 to 7 of 52 was closer to 9 to 14% than 33%.;)
