if there is anyone out there who has any experience with this hospital, please let me know , As a will be heading there soon. I have alread heard from others in London @ Whipps Cross who claims their experiences are better than those of their friends who were rotating in the U.S. Hospitals for Cores (i.e. IM in Michigan=50 patients vs. IM in the UK=150+ patients). please respond if you have any comparisons to make.

I hear that the LOR from the UK are horrible.

I don't really care about the LORs. The grades and the experience outweighs the LORs anyway. Just heard from a student who is there and he said his LORs were excellent. So that's not at the apex of my concern.

can somebody tell me when the rotations begin in the UK - more specifically for Whipps Cross in september since I am planning on starting in the Fall this year? The clinical co-ordinator has said that first week of september is most likely but I was wondering if anybody could be more accurate?

I met a 4th year at Wyckoff that did her whole 3rd year at Stepping Hill. I've asked her to share her experiences. If you like send me a PM with your email and I'll pass it along to her.

Hello guys,
I made it here a few days ago to Stepping Hill. I gotta say that this place rocks. The rotations here are very hands on. Already, I have been able to perform endoscopies on GI patients and other procedures. from what I have heard from some of my friend in ATL and MI some may or may not begetting this type of action. Also, there is a Mass Assessment Unit here that allow students on all levels to have full lightly-supervised autonomy when dealing with patients. This is the best unit to learn your real life medical skills!!! At this Hospital, there is no scut, a lot of pimpin', and tons of opportunities. I feel I have made the best decision to come here. The profs here are very approachable, and love to teach. This is definitely, not a place that SMU students should consider as a last option. As a matter of fact, one should be considered to be so luck to have the opportunity to rotate in the UK IMHO.....

Is Stepping Hills hospital situated in London and if not how far it is from London? I am seriously considering UK for my 3rd year as my spouse might be working ther for next 2 years. Any input about UK hospitals will be greatly appreciated. I have heard about having difficulty in getting all green rotations in America in timely manner so I would like to know about implications of doing the cores in the UK if someone chooses to avoid the delays here.Thanks.

I have found out that only Whipps Cross is situated in London and is a big hospital on 40acres. They are renovating and building in near future.
About Barnsley ,their site says its one of the top rated NHS(national health services) hospital in the U.K. and is associated with University of Sheffield. From what I understand all 3 are teaching hospitals.
Does anybody know whether rotations are available on rolling basis or there is a fixed schedule to start in a year like in fall of every year?
I am from the UK and can tell you all about these hospitals.
Stepping Hill is located in stockport, which is about 5 miles from Manchester. Manchester is a big city, about the size of Boston. The Hospital provides its own on campus acomodation at about $350 us dollars a month. The orientation here begins 28th august 2006

I would like to do my rotations in U.K. but my concern is whether it will have any effect on getting good residencies here .Plus someone was telling me that they use diffrent terminology and drug names etc so for step 2 one has to be careful. If someone who has taken their step 2 and have started residency reads this post share their experience as it will be very helpful for those of us considering U.K rotations.

Did you have to pass the step 1 to go to the UK or can you still go there without a passing score?

I believe starting Jan 2007, you will need a passing Step 1 score. Not too sure though.

So tell us a bit on your experiences at Stepping Hill Hospital. Is the teaching great there? What types of procedures can you do?

During IM, i must have taken about 10 bloods on average per day, catherisation, NG tubes, ABG's, Pleural taps. It all depends on how easy going your team is.
I have scrubed in several times for surgery, students here have assisted in surgery, sutured patients. Its all very hands on.

"The Hospital provides its own on campus acomodation at about $350 us dollars a month." - This sounds great. Can you bring your spouse and children to live here, or is it only for students? Also, I keep hearing that the UK is insanely expensive, is this true? Can you give some examples of prices?
Hospital accomodation manager will not allow more than one person to a room. To be honest, the rooms are not large enough to suit more than one person.
Its not insanely expensive in the UK, the dollar is just weak. its almost 2:1

I was told that if you want to do your cores in the UK that you have to do all of them, why cant we do one or two of them there??

Would doing either all cores, all electives or both, in the UK have an impact (good or bad) on getting a residency in the states???
Any feedback would be much appreciated! Thnks!
there seems to be a quite a few students that have gone to UK for there cores. i wanted to know how they faired when they tried to go back to the US for there electives and trying to get a residency. this info would be great bc there have been people that say its hard to get a residency if you do you core rotation in UK!
you can PM if you'd like! Thanks

Do any of you guys know if US or Canadian students can obtain a residency in the UK?
Also, for clinical placements, how do they determine who gets what placement? Is it based on Step 1 or basic sicence marks, or both?
