Start Psych tomorrow. So far the schedule only showed 5-6 SMU students on board for this rotation at the site. Heard from friends that the surrounding area is worse than Bushwick!! Haven't been to Far Rockaway in years! Will post my experiences as I move along. I hear I'm on call already this Thursday!

I went there yesterday to get a preview of the hospital. The walk from the train stop to the hospital (4 blocks) during a Saturday afternoon was no joke at all. It's a very tough neighborhood, but the hospital seemed decent from what I saw.

Is there a secured parking lot for students and staff?
Is it on the A line?

Yes and Yes...Parking is free. For those heading off to this rotations ask for inpatient or outpatient. Don't get stuck in the ER psych.

For the Psych core rotation at SJEH, you are put either in Outpatient, Detox, Inpatient, Psych ER, or SP4 (Geriatric Unit). I don't think Psych ER is too bad.

Psych ER...It's the department of Psych in the hospital where students actually get to learn from a very competent physician and see some very interesting patients. It's not bad at all.

I met a fellow student from a medical school from the Philippines that is doing clinical rotations at this site. What I found interesting was that this individual hadn't taken the Step 1 exam yet! This person wasn't even awaiting his/her Step 1 score and was allowed to do rotations at SJEH! Interesting...

Easy, worth it, good learning experience if you are in the Psych ER. Psych ER is more work than the other places at SJEH where psych students rotate. Many prefer Tower 4, detox, or even inpatient. Psych er you see everything. Highly recommend this rotation at SJEH.
The only problem is that the site is extremely overbooked till Jan. So if you can wait, I would wait for this rotation to open up again.

anybody know if this hospital provides housing? I am only in NYC for this one rotation so getting a long-term sort of place is not really an option.

I don't think they provide housing, but you can always ask. It is a small hospital. If you are going to be living in NYC just for that rotation I suggest you find a place close to the "A" line.

actually i did pysch there way back...and some kids got housing....but were lucky. There for residents only but sometimes space becomes free. THere right in front of the hospital:mrgreen: . Call up to see if they still do that.

This rotation has been pretty good so far. I have been rotating in Detox and Inpatient (pt-4). Your day is short, you learn the basics in psychiatry and the attendings are very laid back.
