Hi all.

I was wondering if anyone knows the web page that lists the required texts for the incoming January class. Can I get them shipped at home here or do I have to get them shipped to Dominica?

Thanks!

The January booklist is pending approval by the department chairs. It should be sent out very shortly and we will post it here at that time. You will receive a printed list and order information from Bookstores International Group, the company that operates our on campus bookstore. If you order from them, they will ship your books down to the island (clearly, you pay for the shipping).

Many students save themselves a lot of money by buying their books and supplies used here from other students or the Island Thrift store (www.islandthrift.com). Otherwise, you can bring them with you having ordered them from Amazon (or other online booksellers) or your local medical school bookstore.

Best of luck!

If you bring the books with you on the airplane you may use up most of your weight limitation. Having the books deliverd by BIG at a premium cost sometimes eliviates the some of the stress of a first semester student. There are enough things to worry about when you get to Dominica. Books shouldn't be one of them.

Don't even worry about buying textbooks at home and hauling them with you to Dominica. There are always plenty of people here selling their old books and you'll have no problem finding all the books you'll need right here on campus.

You also don't need to worry about bringing a microscope with you. Just like with textbooks, there are plenty of people trying to unload their microscopes. Off the record, though the school may tell you otherwise, you don't need a microscope at all for the first semester. I bought one at home and brought it here and it took up half of one of my luggage bags. I'm now in second semester and I have yet to even take that microscope out of its plastic wrapping. They tell you that you'll need it to took at histology slides, but there are plenty of other resources that you'll easily find on campus (e.g. Smith CD, HistoTime CD) that will alleviate the need for a microscope. In fact, I'd go as far as saying that you'd be at a DISADVANTAGE if you relied heavily on your microscope for first semester histology.

the ONLY books you should buy in the US are the small, BRS-type books. they are expensive here...meaning you should be able to get them much cheaper in the states. plus, a lot of them are so small that carrying them down here isnt a big deal.

I agree with Daniel. Get yourself a Histo BRS in the USA it will be very useful to you. Biochem BRS isn't bad. Pretest for Genetics is a good source. I couldn't have made it through biochem without the Biochem book published by Lippincott. It's got a green cover, if you walk into a text book store, you should be able to find it. Other than that, I think you're set with buying used books here on the island.
