View Full Version : Transfer to Ross...?

A friend of mine asked me to post on his behalf b/c he is not a member of VMD. His name will be with-held for obvious reasons although many of you will know who he is based on his story.
Anyways...his situation is like this:
He lives in NY and wants to do all his rotations in NY b/c he has a family there. He has heard that Ross currently has a major portion of its students in NY while SMU has looked to fill the Saginaw site 1st. Therefore there is a slight risk that he ends up away from his family.
He absolutely loves SMU but cant bear to place his family at risk of moving to Michigan or anywhere other than NY, so he poses the question of whether transferring after 5th semester is the way to go?

Good luck with the transfer, for you can only do it after taking Step 1, and will have to repeat 5th semester at Ross in Miami.

Your friend should call the school and speak with the clinical department. 1.800.498.9700

Many of us did transfer the other way around, and are happy.
I'm from NY too:D

SMU is by far the better medical school. I would never leave SMU for any medical school, let alone Ross. What a huge mistake! Merry Christmas!!:D
Now I will probably get banned for "flaming" by the biased moderators!

Again the contemplation is NOT b/c the student is not happy at SMU. On the contrary they are very happy at SMU and are strictly gathering information for the peice of mind that they will remain in NY and be with their family.
Sure it is a difficult decision but nevertheless they must keep their options open.

Sbturner, it would be really nice if you would inject some reality and common sense into your posts. Given that you attended three caribbean medical "schools" prior to SMU, obviously you DO have a propensity to transfer, and I think transferring for reasons of family or the Stafford at Ross is a far, far better reason than whatever rationale someone has for attending several start-up "schools" in existence for a couple of years.
I think it's great that you're happy at SMU, but please behave with a little dignity and class more befitting a medical student. When you extol SMU as the best in the world without regards to facts and reality, you make the school look stupid for accepting such a delusional person. I think SMU is a fine school and I'm glad I chose it, but let's not fritter away our credibility as students on this board by making wholly baseless and unsupportable statements.

In my opinion, SMU is the best medical school on earth. Students are starting to believe in SMU! Two Caribbean medical schools prior to SMU, and I have no intention of transferring out of SMU. Merry Christmas and Happy New Year! :D

Are you serious?
You mean to tell me that this "person" who will have already spent almost 2 years (20 months of Basic Sciences) away from NY and family, is actually worried about a few more months of rotations at a non-NY location?
The person needs to detach from the umbilical cord for a few months, finish any outside cores and go back to NY for electives. Simple enough.

I would agree.... If this individual did have to go to MI it would only be for a short period of time when you look at the entire scheme of things. On top of that, it's more likely that they won't have to go because of the other students that won't really care.

At first I was very apprehensive about doing rotations outside of NYC. Now I really don't care. As long as I can do most in NYC, great. Just roll with the punches.

Have some faith in SMU and what they can do for you. They will do their best to help you. Happy Holidays!:D

its acutally advantageous to go to a few different states and see different hospital systems, pt populations can be quite different across states so you see wider range of pathology and hospitals are run differently across the country, so getting out there and seeing more is better than having limited exposure, the broad experience will help you in residency and give you a good idea of what you're looking for when you go on different residency interviews... so moving around isnt all that bad.. and trust me..
once you get started with residency you will have ur moments where u miss moving around especially since we get so used to breaks and coming back "home" every 3.5 mths for a few weeks during basic sciences

My desire to remain in NYC was more related to convenience. My wife has a job here, I am in a Masters program here, etc. Now I just want to get the core rotations out of the way as fast as I can. So as long as I can finish my cores...the sooner, the better.

Your right an additional few months wont be much of a change from his current situation. However he has children that continue to get older without their father and that is what bothers him most. I guess you have to be a parent to really understand his feelings.
I told him to contact the school and tell them his story, maybe they can help him out. Do you guys have any other suggestions?

The big question is why can't this person use a computer to post his own questions on valuemd?

*****, just hang in there. You'll be in NYC with your family soon enough, in the meantime worry about finishing 5th semester, then studying for boards, THEN get your clinical situation lined up.
You've been away from your family for almost 2 years, and youre in the US as it is, not like you're still in the Caribbean, so your situation isnt as bad as it sounds.
Do what every medical student does: work hard and sacrifice, it pays off in the end.
