The MedPrep program has been designed for those who are not prepared to begin medical school NOT necessarily to "salvage" those with poor GPA's. Therefore, some of the students are there because they have been away from school for more than 5 years. Some are there because they have chose medicine after years in a totally different profession. Clearly, the criteria is not published. However, our current Dean Rios will soon assume a position with Devry University to begin a program in the States which prepares students for medical school. Eventually, I know they want to expand the program and create a post-bacc program. The masters degree will be accredited in the US unlike any other post bacc or prep program offered to prepare you for other offshore schools. This program will also (eventually) improve one's chances of being accepted in the US.

I was just accepted into the medprep program. Initially, I wasn't too happy about it, but after doing further research I came to gain a lot of respect for the program. It differs dramatically from the medical science programs that are offered at many medical schools. For one, it is not graduate school, which for me was a good thing. I've had enough of graduate school. Also, it guaranteed admission upon successfully completing the requirements. As far as stats go, Ross computed my overall premed GPA at a 3.2. The MCAT did not factor into the decision process. I have not taken a full time science load since 1999. I made very good grades in most of my premed requirements. However, I experience a period of bad health as an undergraduate and did horrible. My first 60 hours as an undergraduate were around a 3.8. My last 60 were around a 2.2. What is so sad is that the bad grades came in the classes that were after my premed requirements -- eg Physical Chemistry. Every US medical school that I talked to me told me that I would have to take an additional 2 years of school in order to show them that I could still be a good student. I just couldn't do that. I'm married and can't take the risk of doing 2 years of school with no secure way of knowing that I could get into medical school. Plus, like many other people here, I am walking away from a good career to pursue my dream. In Janurary of 2005, I will be an MBA/CFP. As someone in business and investment, I have to take a risk with low probability of failure. So, about the medprep, I was a good student. Something happened in my life that caused undue hardship. I don't know if that is what they are looking for, but perhaps it gives you some insight into what they admit. However, I'm sure every case is different. I do believe that Ross saw a great deal of potential or they would not have admitted me to this program.

medprep students seem to be a "hit or miss." most of them that i know of are struggling through...finding classes exceedingly difficult.
but not all are like that. i must admit that i know of 3 former medprepers that are getting or are destined for 4.0s.
i guess it really is all about effort and determination in the end.
