So I'm riding the public bus in Berkeley yesterday (long story -- don't ask), and this junior-highschool kid gets on the bus following a bunch of little teeny-bopper girls. They all make their way to the back of the bus & this kid is being as loud & obnoxious as can be. Obviously trying to grab the girls' attention. The bus driver eventually has to yell at him at one of the stops to sit down & shut up. The heater in the bus is on full blast, all windows are closed & it's approaching somewhere near 120F.
Anyway, the kid has taken off his jacket, and I see that he's wearing a t-shirt that reads "St. George's University School of Medicine." And it has some sort of emblem or crest on the front; presumably the school's. All of this looks like any normal university t-shirt, except in what appears to be from a big red stamp, it has "Transfer Student" across the bottom diagonally. I kid you not.
I'll have to admit I laughed when I saw it, (and then I suddenly remembered that I hadn't even been admitted yet to SGU, so I guess I was sort of laughing at myself). And then I couldn't really figure out whether the shirt was supposed to imply that he'd transferred into or out of SGU.
We both got off at the same stop and I interrupted his little courtship with his girlfriends to ask him where he got the shirt. He said that his dad got it for him "in Mexico." And he seemed to be fairly proud of it, which seemed somewhat odd. It was clear he had no idea what any word of it meant.
Has anyone seen these shirts before? I can't believe they would be in stores in Mexico. It wouldn't make sense since SGU is undoubtedly better than any Mexican med school. But I suppose I could see it being sold as some sort of gag gift in the states.
