My name is Ariel, and I am 34 years old and come from Chicago. I will be starting at Saba Medical School this January. I come from a medical family and thus know that Medical School is going to be a huge challenge, but at the same time I know that with hard work and desire a medical degree is attainable. My brother, an ophthalmology resident told me to understand the big picture and not to get bogged down with all the details that will be thrown our way throughout our medical coursework. I think this is very good advice and wanted to pass this on to my future medical schoolmates.

Also do any of my future classmates who come from a medical family feel as much pressure as I do? I do not want to disappoint my family but most of all myself. I have worked very hard to get this opportunity to study medicine.

14 days left in cold snowy Chicago before I arrive to the tropical paradise of Saba.

Also did you buy all the required books that were on the booklist? If not which ones did you guys not buy and why?

Regards,
Ariel

You can search for a number of recent threads on books.

To summarize, you do not need MOST of the books on the list. My recommendations are that you need Netters, BRS Anatomy, BRS Embryo, Wheaters, and BRS Histo. Moores Anatomy is very optional.

awesome post ariel, good to meet you. i'm not starting jan, but in sept. i know there must be a lot of pressure coming from a medical family, but i have no doubt you will make it. i myself come from a "non-medical" family, so i won't feel that pressure, but i'm the first in my family to pursue this kinda thing, so that makes me nervous. anyways, we will most likely meet sooner or later on the island, so looking forward to meeting you.
