View Full Version : how about internet?
Hi there,
I was wondering if you guys have internet in the library or in the dorm or any types of wireless on campus?
Is there high speed on the Island?
Thanks,
Rico

Yes.
You can get DSL (with a phone line) in a room in the dorms (initial cost is around $750, $500 deposit, and monthly cost is $80 for 128kbps down/64kbps upload speeds. As long as it's not during a surge in orders (first/last week of classes) installation usually takes just a couple of hours - I ordered it just before 1, it was installed (including in-room wiring) by 3:30.
There is wireless around the campus too, after business hours and on the weekends - it's the unused admin bandwidth on the schools satellite connection.
Rumor has it that the bandwidth to the island will be increasing next spring. We'll see.

Let me introduce myself I will be starting at Saba this January, my name is Ariel Chavez and I want to know if it is true that the internet costs $30.00 a month and about 10 cents a minute. Is this true, this seems awfully expensive to me. Also since we are going to be studying most of the time does it make sense to spend this much money on internet access?
14 days left in Chicago, what a bummer!

No, it's not true. Read the post just above yours http://www.valuemd.com/343341-post2.html and find out what the costs are.

Any substantiation of this rumor yet? I'll be arriving at the end of February and am hoping that they will have better bandwidth soon after.

The end of Feb?
I'd explain, but I prefer to be an unknown quantity.

Is it possible to use the wireless during hours or is it blocked or something?? Is it possible to bribe someone in admin to allow you to use it during the day??

No.
You can use the wired computers in the library during school hours, if necessary.

I am, yes. Right now I'm using a friend's 128k DSL, but the place I'm moving into in a couple weeks has 256k service installed already.
I heard from a reliable source that the rumors of faster speeds come spring are accurate. No guarantees of course, but it sounds promising.

How fast is the DSL..is it as fast like the one we have in the States.
Also..I was thinking about bringing a wireless router so that I can connect to the internet with my laptop.. Do you guys think that it is possible.

128K is 128K, not as fast as my DSL was in the States (and nowhere near like my cable).
And yes, you can bring your wireless router. I'm using mine right now.

So after business hours and on the weekend you can use the school's internet with a wireless router? Can you only link up to it if you are on campus?

DSL2 is rolling out in some areas of the states now. Up to 24 megabit.
All I know is that if you actually test the speed of the connections here, it sucks. We have 128k. We get about 50k. Someone else has 256 and gets just under 128. They've oversold the bandwidth, and the more people that come to the island, the worse it gets.

this main question is, as medical students, Do we need internet?
assuming we use phone to reach loved ones.

You can only link up to the schools internet while on campus. When the wireless is working you use their router

It's nice to have if you don't live near the school. Internet access of some sort is necessary for various school related projects - you can use the computer lab if you want, or your own.
And having vonage is better than any phone service on the island. Too bad you need the local phone line for DSL
