No starbucks, no juice places (like jamba juice), few if any health food stores, no cold-stone ice cream, no dunkin donuts, water is ok but not great (safe, but highly chlorinated).
There is a brand-spankin' new Baskin Robbins right next to the gym. There are several Subways (the sandwich, not the train), one Quiznos which is close to the nice internet coffee shot (Cafe del Sol), which is also close to the movie theater. The grocery stores (one about 1/4 mile from the RH) are just like a US grocery store. You can get anything from steak to cream cheese to cheescake. Being in Grand Cayman is almost like being in a really expensive version of Florida (except for all of the Caymanians and Jamaicans).
There are plenty of places to eat that are fairly close to the RH. I highly suggest getting a car, but it is not absolutely necessary.
BTW...I think there were 8 cruise ships in today. Georgetown was CRAZY!

Stores close a little earlier than the US much of the time, however, that's starting to change. One interesting thing is that grocery stores are not open on Sundays. This causes Saturdays at the grocery store to be crazy...I would suggest not going on Saturdays to any grocery store.
Something else that's interesting has to do with New Year's Eve. In Cayman, bars are allowed to serve drinks until 1:00 am every night but Saturday, when they have to close at 12:00 midnight (so everyone will get up and go to church on Sunday...seriously). Because New Year's Eve is on a Saturday night, there was a petition to extend the time that bars can serve until 1:00 am. This was shot down by the government, and bars will be forced to shut down by midnight. That's a real stinker...

Fast Food - Theres KFC and Papa John's Pizza waling distance from RH
Real Food - Theres a nice restaurant "The Wharf" next to RH, and a
restaurant "Coconut Joe's" fairly close by too and they have
Starbucks coffee too.
You can join the local Blockbuser and get movies.
Grocery stores are just like US supermarkets, if not better.
Foster's Supermarket has Haagan Daz right next to it...walking distance
from the SMU campus.
although everyone tells me water is safe,,, people take a month getting used to it...so I suggest either a filter..or buying Spring water.
You can bake and cok to your heart's content in the RH kitchen, as it has
4 ovens.
Printer....yes bring one if you wanna be able to read your notes ..
you can print at lirary for 10 cents/ page ...but its more convenient to
have your own...and most likely you will use it.
HAve fun...!

Hello everyone, I have some quick questions that need to be answered
1.a. Food places near the RH= (1 minute walk)
-Papa John's Pizza (had case of maggots a few weeks ago)
-Fidel's Irish Pub
-Thai Orchid
-one health store (not sure what it's called)
-Captain's Bakery and Grill
b. Additional food places within walking distance of RH (minimum 5 minute walk)=
-KFC
-Kirk Supermarket
c. Still, places that you could walk from RH and it would take you (minimum 10 minute walk)=
-Coconut Joe's
-Pizza Hut
-Cimboco (Carribean restaurant)
-Antigua Gelateria (Italian ice cream shop)
-Cafe Del Sol (coffee shop and internet cafe...just like Starbucks)
-El Kabab (gyro and falafel hut)
2. Do you have Cold Stone's icecream or dunkin donuts with baskin robbins?
Baskin Robbins (brand new and right across street from Cimboco and all those other restaurants)
Haagen Daaz
TCBY (to be opened soon)
3. is cheesecake scarce? If so, what about creamcheese? Hands down, best cheesecake on the island is at Treats Coffeeshop and Cafe...their cheesecake tastes like something you would get at Cheesecake Factory you might go to back at home...
Also, fresh cheesecake by the slice and variety platter at Foster's grocery store.
4. Are there any juice places like jamba juice or healthy food stores? I'm so fed up with fastfood. No jamba juice, but one healthy store adjacent to RH...
5. Do they sell sandwhiches? Lol...you will be sandwiched out by end of semester...Subway, Quizno's, and Hard Rock Cafe have some great sandwiches
6. Do you guys have starbucks? No, but Cafe del Sol is just like it...
7. I need to buy a bike, so where is the nearest bike store and how far by walking distance? No clue on this one...
8. Do I have to bring my water filter? Personal choice...
9. I love to bake, and sometimes cook so are there any cooking facilities in the dorms? Yes, 6 ovens in RH kichen, 32 stoves..Thanks everyone. :-smiley7 Bring your own oven mitts, please...
Hope this helps...

Does the supermarket have a health food section? With Lactaid milk, Lactaid cottage cheese?
What about tuna cans...how much are they down there? I read they are expensive.

Yes, but not a very good one. Yes on the Lactaid milk, never even heard of Lactaid cottage cheese, and tuna isn't that bad...I eat it all the time. You will soon learn that everything is more expensive here.

Thanks for the heads up the food situation.
Guess I'm living off of Met-Rx shakes, oat meal and peanut butter!
