Looks like like Ill be moving soon and possibly starting a residency on April 1st per approval of the program. (worst case July 1st) Generally speaking, prematch offers tend to come from desperate programs but I can assure you this program is hardly desperate. Im the first foreign grad so they are feeling there way thru this ECFMG certificate thing but the contract is coming next week. Dont let anyone tell you boards scores arent important. They are the most important thing. The interview is the second most important thing. I will admit however that Family Practice is the easiest residency to get but if you want the program in the best geographic area and with the best quality of education, Study hard, it will absolutely pay off and you can end up ANYWHERE YOU WANT!!!! Best of luck to all. Sincerely, Scott Jones DC MS IV

Congratulations Scotty! I am wondering, how did you approach the pre-match question? Did they offer it themselves? Were you looking for a particular visa too as I heard a prematch is given to those who want an H1 or J1. You rightfully say interview is second most important - can you please tell us what is asked and how can you "impress" at an interview? Thanks in advance and all the best!

When I interviewed I always followed up with a thank you email. Before my interview I always called and inquired if they offer prematch anonymously and if the answer is yes or maybe, I would bring it up in the interview itself. However my prematch offer was not brought up by me. The only reason it was mentioned was because of my scores. I stated I would absolutely consider a prematch offer. Then I called the program 2 days after my interview and asked if I could do a one month elective. I figured if they liked me enough in the interview then they would have no problem offering a 4 week elective which is what happened. This way they saw me for one month prior and I saw them. My advice is study for your boards. Do kaplan on the island and take it seriously and if given the chance watch the tapes a second time and study the notes again. If anyone has any questions or concerns my cell number is 609-352-9539. I will be more than happy to answer any questions as I was extremely grateful for people who helped me over the phone before I started at Saba. It will all pay off, just do the work. Scott

Congratulations! It is good to see fellow Carib students doing well and achieving so-called 'unreachable' goals!
Keep up the good work, you can help inspire ALL of us!

Congratulations on your contract!
Thanks for all the help you've given us here. I hope you will continue to let us know how things are going as you finish Saba and start your Residency.
Best of Luck!
Congrats Scott!! Cheers to a job well done.

My job over the last 4 years or so on this forum is to try to negate 95% of the Naysayers out there that question foreign training and particularly training in the carribean. Many speak without any experience or if they had a negative expeerience they were not adequately prepared for some of the hoops you have to jump thru. If you go to one of the established offshore schools it works out. I used to get a gut ache reading this forum everytime someone posted something negative and when you are about to make such a big decision to go to school offshore thats the last thing you want to read. Its a leap of faith for sure and if you are commited you will succeed. I will definitely post my experiences at Mayo. I begin on March 27th and I am very excited about it. If you go to Saba, Ross, St. Georges, AUC or either of the MUA's or St. Christophers and do the work it will work out. These schools all have decent basic sciences and legitimate clinical rotations. The best bang for the buck though is Saba hands down but understand that the tuition at all of these schools is going up so the sooner you pull the trigger the cheaper it will be. If you can get into a US MD or DO school by all means go that route as it is just an easier process and your rotations are not all over the place and you certainly dont have to do as well on the boards (we all know that is a fact). AMG's get first priority and that is a fact we will all have to live with. Once they realize you are as smart as they are (and in many cases smarter) no one questions what medical school you went to. Best of luck to all Scott

Scotty -
Congrats on the spot at Mayo. I elected to pre-match too - in fact I didn't even go through the match. I did a month of FP at a community-based program in N.O. and LOVED it, signed a contract last month! Are you going to graduation?
