Restraint on conducting courses
The Kerala High Court today restrained the Universal Empire Institute of Medical Sciences, a Kochi-based private institution, from admitting any student for its medical and dental courses unless the institution is recognised by the Medical Council of India or Dental Council of India as the case may be, or the degrees awarded by the university to which it is affiliated are treated on a par with the degrees awarded by the Indian universities.
Justice C. N. Ramachandran Nair issued the directive on a writ petition filed by P. C. Sunil, secretary, Indian Dental Association, Kerala Branch and another doctor.
The petitioners said that the institution was conducting MBBS, MD and MS courses without obtaining approval from statutory bodies like the Medical Council of India and Dental Council of India.
The petitioners claimed that the institution had been affiliated to the International University of Health Sciences, Government of St. Christopher and Nevi, West Indies. They wanted the court to prohibit the functioning of the institution.
