dunno if it was my contractor fooling me or what but what all i thought and confirmed before going to russia was not there.firstly, as i was told that teachers speak good english etc was not there.i was shocked to see the way teachers thought for minutes before educing their words.mis-spelling was so prominent that whole class was enjoying the crap going on.every person asks for money.even for passport registrations the office people asked money openly even though my visa was still valid.day after day i saw every person asking money.commision, bribe etc is asked so shamelessly.after seeing classes, curriculum ,teachers etc ,i decided to withdraw admission.and this decision of mine entailed another row of bribing and stuff.the university principal asked me money to return my passport.he plailnly said " no money no sign..yes money yes sign" that was all that bald fella could say in english.i was stunned to see principal asking money for so very legal work of mine.had to give 600$ as bribe for getting back my documents.they dun let you meet dean.
i am not trying to frighten prospective students but i am just referring to my horrendous experience there.crap english, stupid teachers talking in pidgin english seeing cieling, moreover i was told that from 4th year only few subjects will be in russian to facilitate interaction with patients.to my utter surprise, from 4th year on everything will be in russian medium .even books, exams and stuff.i was really fooled badly just cuz of greed for money of a bankrupt countrymen.my university is touted to be second ranked in russia.it's rsmu called m2 in moscow.i shelled out so much money but didnt get anything.and to tell about hostel for foreign student,,,omgoshies...i could still compromised with hostel if studies were what i paid for.anyways.i lost badly in this whole process..both money wise and time wise.could have utilised this for preparing again in my country.:( anyone going out for studies, i request him/her to ask students studying there.dun go if you have not talked to bunch of students actually studying there.just dun count on agents or contractors.my contractor left me after getting his commision in the middle of unknown city.we made our way back to hostel somehow.this experience really made me despondent about russia.never expected such thing to happen.if they dunno good english worth teaching in then i think, ethically they shouldn't announce english medium programs.

Reading your experiences, it seems like you had a horrible time. . . that's an understatement I know . . . but maybe S.N.A.F.U would be more appropriate.

Russia at this time is reminescent of 1920's gangland America. It will take some time, but the country where the sun never sets will eventually straighten itself out. While I cannot comment on individual schools, given the choices available I am not sure why any student from North America would go there.

Hey there Orphan. I sent you a PM but maybe you don't check thm. I know it was a bitter experience for you going to school in Russia but if you are willing to talk about it a little more I would really appreciate it. As somone still very interested in going to Russia I am a little disappointed to read what you wrote. Were there any English medium students who were at all happy with the program? Based on what you've said so far that seems very unlikely. I'm curious if you know if that is common at other schools claiming to offer full English services too.
Also, could you tell me what the real application process is at RSMU? for example where did you have to go to write the entrance exam and how much do they charge in tuition? Also, what did the others who were staying plan on doing? Learning Russian fluently enough to study medicine in 3 years time. I do have more questions but if you wouldn't mind answering those I'd really appreciate.

People in positions of authority often take advantage. If you ever go back to that school and some tries to take advantage of you again, call him on his or her shit i.e. dishonorable actions.

well, sorry to hear about your experience. I am Polish but I would be kind of scared to go to Russia. That country is very corrupted, Ive heard that foreigns have problems with locals especially if they are not white. I would probably blend in, Polish people look alomst the same as Russians, but still there is a risk. On the other hand you should not judge entire Russian medical education based on one experience and one school. There have been some possitive posts about Russian schools in the past, and your post is the only negative one that I know of.Good luck with your medical education, whereever you decide to go. take care
hey i did my MD from russia, i did not find so difficult there, as hw much u have written, even i liked there.
abt education i liked their system, that is different that students from other countries dont want to study.
I have already cleared my USMLE exams with gud scores. i think that is enough to say.

hi everybody,
i was warned about going to russia but i still took the risk of going there.and it was a terrible mistake.teachers fucken dunno how to speak english..writing 'male' as 'mail'..they mug their lectures and vomit them out in class..they keep watching cieling as if they fuckin dun know what they are saying.about student, the dorm is nearly a whore house.girls and boys live as if opressed people released from captivity and wanna spend time like a freak to have their time as long as they are there.i was so disappointed that i took decision of coming back.i was told and heard from many ex-students that it's very good.but i was screwed at every point.education wise, money wise, accomodation wise and stuff.everybody demands money.hostel management kept me in three seater to distress me and compell me to pay bribe to get two seater.anyways, hostel is not the prime focus.it's about studies.i was told that books will be in english in english medium examination.but to my utter surprise, after 3rd year every damn thing would be in russian.they fucken dun let ya talk with patients and just give ya written history and ask to suggest medicines.they think foreigners are incapable to talk to patients in russian.reading medicines in another language is like increasing the effort needed to study tough stream like medicines in multifolds.about students already there..nearly all of them are stupid turds who are wasting time going to pubs, discs, fucking girls in dorm.my room parteners nevah came to sleep at room.just for getting fresh in morning do they evah came to room.i fucken dun care what they do.all i wanted was good studies.but damn, whole environment was like"enjoy yer life, yer a released animal".damn, that seems waste of time to me.no bright students there.all failures and overaged ripened guys who did graduation and post graduation in different stream and woke up late to study medicines.they just make merry, chat and gossip till late night and sleep.the examination system is like 5 chapters in every exam which makes medicines such an easy go.and would ya believe...? final exams for english medium students are in russian? and from 3rd year every exam for english medium students is in russian? i fail to understand "why not english?" when they are asking so much money.i do agree that there are good students.but in whole hostel i met only two guys who were serious.but i cant study at a place where teachers mug lectures in foreign lang for them and speak seeing roof so that no child asks them question.stupid spellings, stupid explainations.damn, i just fall short of words.about administration...just dun ask man!!!! foreign deptt is just to screw money outta yer pockets.ladies and men shamelessly ask for money.even for getting an exit visa he said "500$ or live here for three months till ya get yer visa"..damn ...even while registering myself, i was well in office during visa validity period but the bitch sitting there wouldn't take my visa cuz she wants money..asked 100$.gave that time else she said you'll go back to yer country.attended classes..HOPELESS! my univ is filed with malaysians.they dun have any job than hearing songs and cooking some stinking dish.
again, i am just telling about hostel on request of some person called "stiullapplying".i didn't care about hostel.most of the times i was checking out univ or senior student.omgoshies..even 5th year student couldn't tell medicines..dissection ain't there..just some already opened body.then dissection comes late in study program.the only thing told by everyone and carefully observed and seen by me was "people who can't speak a language<english> properly...how can they teach me medicines in that language?".this english medium program is just to brew money for money-starved administration there.the dean's gf was pregnant and he said to me.."i have promised her a BMW and an apartment,if ya gimme just 100$, how will i give her all that?" damn, is it my responsibility to fund his promises?but i had to give otherwise i would be forced to live for three months there which would have costed more than the bribe.they just take advantage of yer language naivity, lone status in foreign land etc.anywhich ways..too much for today..will tell ya guys more if yer interested, some other time.writing all this really pains me for the loss of wasted precious time.now i am preparing again for my enterance exams in my own country.russia is surely doomed if they fool people like this.they earn bad name.they should clearly tell that they cant teach good english courses.why fool students , invite them and make them feel devastated?

 This is incredible... You're gonna come on here and bash people for not being able to speak good English when you cant even speak it yourself?!! You certainly cant write it correctly.
For future reference, before you start bashing people; you'd better make sure you dont have faults in the same thing you're bashing them about.
And personally, I think no one is to blame but yourself for you getting in the situation you were in. Had you done enough research, you would've known all this stuff about the Russian schools before you got there. I've never been to Russia, but I have researched their schools and nothing you've said has come as any surprise to me. If you're going to school in Russia and have done your research, you should know what to expect going in there. And foreigners have gone there and completed the programs (in Russian) and come out to be successful doctors. So it can be done.

okay,i'm like my friend orphan there,i'm left russia, after one semester due to the following reasons which are pretty much the same as his
1.i came to pavlov through a contractor, and i tried avoiding going through a contractor,i emailed the school,i called and i faxed, but it seems i could only go through a contractor and i did,it seemed pretty cool at first becasue he answered my emails on time and everything went smoothly and ofcourse all the info on the website seemed cool.i got here and my first thought was what the hell am i doing here.for the amount of money foreign students are paying you'd think they could at least have walls painted.its really dirty and unsanitary.but i figured if i kept my own room clean then it would be okay, and it was, until i had to go out and use the kitchen or the toilet.....gagging the whole time.
2.you know how the contractor is supposed to help you with getting registered and your health screening and insurance.this guy did not,you ahve to go to the clininc yourself, without knowing the language to get things done.THE FRUSTRATION! and you sing your school contract without knowing what it says because its in russian!!they take your passport for a month in the beginning for the initial registration and its pretty scary walking around with just a piece of paper stating where you go to school.and you need to wait till you get it back to buy a sim card for a phone,or just get a friend to do it if youre lucky.
3.the contractor lives in the hostel with you,so you seem him a lot and he kind of bugs you aobut tuition fees,he would walk around and knock on peoples doors asking for his money, drunk most of the time.
4.for people that have stayed and finished i say congratulations for putting up with being in the hostel most of the time because its dangerous to go most places especially in the evening because you are a foreigner, you have to get everyting done during daylight, the safety issue is getting a bit much in st petersburg, the latest person that was killed is a guy that i knew from cameroon, here is the bbc link http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/europe/4559566.stm
he was killed 10 mins away from the hostel where i lived at 9 pm.if you are okay living in fear and always wondering who is goin got be hit next and when then be my guest.if you can handle only goin got school and back to the hostel and occasionally to the store to buy food and not really do anything else then be my guest.
5.as for the teaching, especially anatomy was impressive because you really need to know your stuff for that class, but as for the others the english is limited and it can be a laugh most of the time.and its easy to cheat your way through here, coming here is not based on academic performance, its about how much money you have.even the teachers can be bribed,a good botle of vodka and hey you passed the exam!
currently the general medical council in the uk has suspended medical degrees from pavlov.go figure.

From the 1st post, i would imagine that english is his or her second lang. Now XXAtti pointed out that his/her command of english was poor, which is blatently obvious, now if i was right in saying that its the posters second lang. then he/she should know that speaking and general communication in a second lang. is hard1, so therefore why slate the russian profs. for having a not so good command of english? surely you understand how hard it is for them having to teach in different lang.? Could it be that you are not good at understanding oral english?

i just read your post.idon't know what city & medical school you got stuck in,but my experience totally opposite.i spent 7 yrs in saintpetersburg, without any problems.I studied in russian & never had any problem with bribery, everyone was wonderful & always willing to help.teachers competant in there field.my school had students from all over the world,we were well educated & prepared to practice medicine in our respective countries.

I totally agree with this post. I spent a year in Russia and it was the most crappy year of my life. Screwed up skinheads and hooligans everywhere like cockraches, waiting to beat u up. no freedom of life at all. u just cant walk out and go for a stroll freely. nobody cares if u study/live/die.all they want is their goddamn roubles. All i heard in russia in that 1 year was 2 sentences:
Lift is not working?(lift nee rabotat) and,
Its not my problem, its urs (Eta vaash problem)
but thankfully, they gave me my exit visa without a problem

Why didn't you talk to your consulate about not having a passport? I'm sure they would have provided you with another or told the school to give it back. I'm sure if someone was holding my passport for an undue period of time my first call would be the American Embassy.

I studied in Russia, in the Rostov State Medical University. I actually was a scholarship student and studied in the Russian medium. One thing I would like everyone to know, is that it's utter rubbish and frankly foolish to study any Major in English, in a country where English is by far not even the 5th language. I went to russia because I wanted to know the intricacies of Soviet Medicine that makes it unique. I wanted to know those specificities that enabled the return of 70% of injured soldiers in world war 2 to the war front. The best way to achieve this goal was to study in the native language of the country in question. I sat for my USMLE Step 1 and 2 while still there without any Kaplan preparation and scored 97and 95 resoectively. I got to the US in Nov last year and in March, already secured a residency position. The probability that you will meet with dubious people when in the Russian medium is very low. For instance, most old doctors from the orthodox soviet medicine era do not teach in english. And whenever an attending knows you're genuinely interested in learning, they give you grades you really deserve without bribe and let you get as much clinical experience as you want. There were several people from my class who were very interested in surgery and started assisting from 3rd year. By the time we were in 6th year , they had done over 500 operations individually. Russia is a place where you could get the best training, if you so desire, or the worst training if you do not try to. and worst of all, some people come out of school with little or no sound clinical experience and very poor clinical knowledge, because they didn't really study (were just trying to get satisfactory grades which is relatively easy to accomplish in russia) and showed no interest in getting clinical experience.
To cut my long and boring story short, you need to be a very focused person to study in Russia. If you notice, i didin't say the girls are a big distraction. I believe one does not disturb the other. However, to everything there is a limit. If you want to womanize, you could go ahead, but do not over indulge in it, otherwise, you would forget your priorities.
Good luck to every prospective russian uchenik. Nadeyus vam tam ponravitsya. Mne ochen ponravilos, i ya eshe raz zakhotel by eto perezhit.

So i think your home is where you are
And for those of you who are going to russia just thing of the corruption as being illigal rather then ligal like in US all the fees you have to pay here atthe registrars office youll pay twice as less in Russia in person call it what ever.
