Can someone who is on the island tell me how much I can expect to pay for the dsl modem, used, when I get there. How much do students usually sell theirs for?

but the chances of you getting DSL anytime during your first 4 months here are slim to none. Cable and Wireless (people that do dsl) has limited data ports so there is a waiting list that is 3-4 months long depending on people that give up their DSL. Used dsl modems go for 500EC, new they are 800. I have been on the waiting list 2 months now, you may get lucky though and move in with someone that already has it.
enjoy,

The reason for the waiting list is not for lack of lines, but a lack of modems. If you have a modem, go to Cable and Wireless and tell them that you already have one, and all you need is the line and they will hook you up. I know of three friends last semesters you bought modems, went to the office, and in a week were hooked up.

No, a cable modem won't work, nor will an ADSL modem from the states. I tried and spent all that money in the states for nothing. The phone lines are different here in terms of how the data lines work.

How about the good old 56k dialup modem in all computers. Will they work and what is the phone charge per minute for the internet?

Yes, your dial-up modem will work with the dial-up service. It costs about $68EC per month plus a small $0.25EC fee each time you dial-up. AS you can see, it can get expensive really quickly. That is why most students go with the ADSL as soon as they can.

My friend and his room-mate are leaving and are selling their Cable and Wireless ADSL Modems if anyone is interested. They may sell them before they leave, but if they dont, they are gonna leave both modems behind with me. If anyone is interested, come August 20th when they leave, PM me, and ill let you know if I have their modems to sell. Again, 2 Cable and Wireless ADSL modems available, maybe for the upcoming semester.

i am interested in obtaining one of the modems. however i would not be on the island until sept 2.
I too am interested in purchasining one of the modems but will also not be on the island until sept 2. I might be willing to pay extra for you holding one for me. Please get back to me, thanks in advance

Nope. The real reason for the list of Cable and Wireless DSL is lack of modems. Maybe you are talking about internet Cable,, Marpin company..
The same company for cable TV, now if you have a Marpin Cable modem you will get internet in a week,, but they dont have modem for sell, so you have to buy them from students. I know people with DSL modem and still dont have DSL. I have dialup. The trick with dialup is leaving your computer on 24/7. That way they only changer you for one call.

That is exactly what I said, C&W and Marpin both have a lack of modems. C&W just doesnt say that like Marpin does. But if you are persistent, and talk to the right people, e.g. Donald, Mrs G. Joseph, etc, and you have a modem, you can get hooked up right away. I have many friends who have gotten ADSL this year, with no waiting list due to them already having modems, you just have to be persistent. Btw, I'm 3rd semester, but if you are 2nd, i know people in 2nd too and I can give you their names privately, maybe u can talk to them and ask them. Dont know anyone in 1st who can tell you their experience in getting it
when you say you have to be on all the time for dial up to avoid the connection fee of 25 cents, does the dial up disconnect often, or if you leave your comp on it stays on as long as your screen saver is off?

I am sorry,,, I typed it wrong.. What I meant to say is that cable and wireless does have limited space. but if you have the Cable Marpin modem, then you get your internet fast. But not with Cable and Wireless. There is a lot of people in second semester still on the waiting list..
there are people who get lucky and get DSL really fast and there are people who were on the list and now they dont know why they are not on the list.
Is all about LUCK..
No the dialup doesnt disconnect maybe, like 2 times in a month..
But the thing is that you have to keep the internet moving..
so what you do, is go to Kazaa and keep something downloading all the time because Cable and Wireless will disconnect you if you are not active.. so in other words I am always downloading movies..
And when you are going to use the internet just stop the download and surf the internet. If you have a laptop you can close it and it keeps running.

No, I don't think it will. But you can bring it and ask if you want.
