Hey everyone. I found a company in Linden, NJ that appears to be the most economical thus far when shipping to Dominica. It is more economical than Amerijet. It is called Econocaribe Consolidators. The Phone number is (908) 925-8858. I had never heard of the company before nor do I believe it was ever mentioned before on this forum so I am giving you guys a heads up. My mother's job requires her to frequently use this company to ship overseas and she has never had a problem with them. I was quoted just under $200 for shipping 250 pounds of goods. It leaves every Thursday from NJ and heads to Miami. A week later it leaves Miami and arrives in Dominica in six days. That puts the total time at about 2-3 weeks. I will let you guys know how it goes since I am dropping off my stuff at their location this upcoming monday.

I've never heard of that company BUT I have heard of several students shipping things with a company that nobody else had ever heard about and their things took almost 2 months to get here by boat!!! Be careful.

I, too, have never heard of them nor have I heard of anyone using them. I have heard of some of the same horror stories that MitchDC alludes too. These folks are not listed in the Dominica phone book but since they are "consolidators", I think they take small shipments such as yours and gather them into a larger shipment that is then sent via a regualr shipping company. They MAY be very legitimate but I would find out exactly what company will be shipping to Dominica and who will take possession from them in Dominica. If there are problems with your shipment, you will know who to contact locally to get assistance.

Dean Wagner, can you provide the names of the most reputable & commonly used shipping companies, utilized by Ross students. Ideally companies that operate in NY & NJ. MitchDC feel free to respond to this post as well. Thanks in advance to you both.
I think that the most common are Amerijet which ships by air and Tropical which ships by sea. If the box was small and light weight, you could use DHL and FedEx but these would be much too expensive if the box was heavy.
As far as I know, these are the companies that most students know but MitchDC will tell us if he is aware of any other favoured carriers.
Hello,
I use Laparkan. http://www.laparkan.com You can call them up and they deliver how ever many barrels you want to your house. I had 3 barrels delivered to my house ($90 USD) and then I filled them all up for a total of 650 lbs. They then pick the barrels up at your house and ship them. It takes 2 weeks to get to Dominica. They have offices in NY, NJ, ETC. It is a good company and I know of many students that use them. It then costs about $ 50/barrel to ship them. So you can ship about 250 LBS for about $80-90 USD. That includes the cost of the barrel and shipping. I shipped 3 barrels for $200.00. (like 650 lbs total)

Hey LINY. Thank you so much for that info. I am going to look into that ASAP. I tried calling today, Saturday, but they are closed. That sounds like a much better bet. It is easier to pack into the barrels, more economical, and I believe the goods probably have a better chance of not breaking. One question, you said you paid $90 for three barrels to get delivered. Was that just a delivery fee, the price for the barrels, or was that fee part of the total shipping expense? Basically, did you pay $90 plus $200 or did you pay $200 total?

650 pounds!
You bringing a refrigerator or a horse?
Hey,
You have to first buy the barrels from them. They are $30/barrel. They deliver them to your house. Then shipping you add to that. So my friend sent one barrel and it cost her a total of $110.00. (30+80) She lives in Florida, perhaps its cheaper there.
I sent alot of stuff in the barrels. If u don't want to spend $12 USD on a box of cerial or spend money on any other stuff that is just so much cheaper in the US then send it down. DEFINATELY BRING BLANK CDS. THEY ARE REAL EXPENSIVE HERE. The stores here are very expensive. I also sent down some books in it, blender, George Foreman Grill, Cloths, Speakers, and a whole bunch more. You will realize how much stuff is when you get here. I also sent down water, however they limit the amount you can bring down.
Stuff that is really expensive here which you can go to Costco or SAM's Club and buy for Cheap and ship is Shaving Gel, body wash, Scope, toothpaste, powerbars, etc.
When I got the barrels in Dominica they only taxed me $58 USD and I had alot of stuff. It all works out. There are things you cannot get here. So shipping is your best bet.
Take Care
Please don't bother bringing water! We have enough for everyone! We are an island wth 365 rivers. We can keep you hydrated!
