go to St John Hospital in Grosse Pointe.

Better electives.
better residency.
better hospital
better area.

just my opinion, but I did do electives at both places

I did OB at Providence. I thought it was a very good rotation. Very busy, and they were nice people to work with. I would truse FLK's judgement, since he is much more familiar with the area. G

I was there for an interview with the Dean of Admissions at AUC and it wasn't the best area. It's just Detroit - kinda industrial and, not to offend anyone who is from there, scummy. Not a lot of greenery. I can't really speak about the hospital though. It was decent. Sorry, that's all that I know.

I didn't do any cores there. I have heard good things about the core rotations.
I was referring only to 4th year electives.
The thing I didn't like about providence, was the lady that handled the electives ( Nicky Flood ) She was rude, lazy and ineffecient. In fact, this was her job, and she acted like she really resented lifting even one finger for us.
I don't know if she is still there, since it was along time ago.
I felt really ignored on my 3 rotations there ( actually, it was 2 rotations ...ortho and anesthesiology )
The cardiology rotation was so poorly organized, I quit the rotation after 2 days.
They basically just sent me over to some clinic and I was on my own. Nobody was expecting me. There was no schedule.
I stood around for 2 days and told them to take a flying leap.

St John was very organized for 4th year electives.
At the time, there was FREE housing, and you could eat free unlimited in the cafeteria, just by signing some sheet that said you were on call ( of course, we took call every day :o )

Hey, I don't know about the actual experiences, but as far as location and size wise, I would have to give the nod to St. John. It's technically listed as being a "Detroit" hospital, although it borders the affluent suburb of Grosse Pointe. I used to volunteer there (for about a year), and I can tell you that they have excellent facilities as well as being one of the biggest hospitals in southeastern Michigan. The hospital is bigger and the area is better. Also, if you go look at the street behind the hospital, there are houses and apartments you can rent while you're there. So if you're going to be there, you might not even need a car. I don't know if you need a contract, but they are in nice shape. Also you are much closer to Canada (Windsor is great to party in) as well as the lakeshore with all of the waterfront. Rent the movie "Grosse Pointe Blank", you'll get an idea of what I'm talking about. Oh, and for those of you with kids, just to let you know that Grosse Pointe's public school system is tied for #1 in the state.

This might be a little too in depth, but hey it's one of the few things I actually DO know about, and it may have helped some unregistered lurker... 8)
