Why not just split a house?
http://www.stmaartenproperties.com/feature.php?id=178&l=

2 grand for a 4 bedroom. Two people or couple could just split this and it'll work out to a grand each for a 2 bedroom. Yes? No?

That's what I did. In my first 2 semesters I was down there sans wife. I split a 2 bedroom place with 3 people. after that, We (my wife and I) split a 2 bedroom house with another couple. It worked out pretty well. G

2 grand for 4 bedrooms is not bad and it sure looks like a nice place to stay. Only question is what if your roomies turn out to be nutbags :?

Jeff,
You like the website or what? I definitely will be interested in doing something like that in the spring. We need to find one with a pool.

Yeah, I owe you one dude. We need one with a pool and a pool table(or a pool table in the pool would work also). :D

Hmmm,

What do the houses look like - are they in pretty good shape, with room for desk in each bedroom, and in a good location? Probably not an option this semester - I already sent my housing deposit, but maybe next semester?

Greg,
I wouldn't worry too much if you're going to be hanging in the dorms...one semester in SXM will be more than enough time for you to shop for potential housing in the areas surrounding campus and beyond. Most of the apartments I've seen thusfar have been really nice, some recently renovated, and yet others brand spankin' new. Depends what you want and how much you're willing to spend.

Aloha,

as soon as you get there just go to a casino and gamble 50% of your tuition. that way you will be able to get a really really nice house, and have lots of money to spend on cool stuff! and if it doesn't work out, you will be able to look back and on it someday and laugh, because hey, life is funny.

...you could loose all your student loan $$$ and have to live on the French Side 'cause it's so much cheaper. I met a local yesterday who lives with his girlfriend of 17 years and their child in a 2 BR apartment for $375 a month. I dunno, I hear some students do choose to live on the French Side...I know nothing of it...
