DEFINITILY buy the nutrition book. For the first exam he takes most of his questions from the back of the book...no joke. So its a definite must buy. Canman was right with everything else. I would higly recommend buying Microbilogy made Ridiculously simple (its not on the list)-it really helped with course and making dry facts more memorable.

Let me preface my answer with the statement that I LOVE BOOKS! And being that I do not like attending class they are my primary source for information.
For Vinnies out of the list I bought the following:
1) Katzung (the small one). The small Katzung also has some nice quesitons to test your knowledge, which is always nice to see if you are on the right track. You can always borrow the larger Katzung from the library, they have about 8-10 copies. I did buy the larger one but I have rarely used it.
2) Lippincot Pharm- If you have been a fan of the lippincott series in the past, get it. But I have only used it for the autonomics section of the course. Some people swear by it and others dont even own a copy. The library does not have too many copies of it, so if you do not want to buy it I suggest checking it out early from the library.
3)The merck manual is classic reference that my mom still references to this day. I believe its an integral part of a doctors library but you can always buy it when you start clinicals, since I have not used it once down here.
4) Save yourself the money and DO NOT buy: "Fluids and Electrolytes in the Surgical Patient". I feel the book is terrible.
5) I also bought the Imaging Atlas for Human Anatomy but I have yet use it and we have 43 more days remaining. So I have found it to be really useless and it isnt even a nice looking book I could add to my medical library. Flimsy soft cover.
There are no assigned books for Pathophys-thankfully- they give you more than enough packets to keep you very busy.
Those are the books that I purchases and my views on each of them.
I do recommend some books that are not on the school list:
1) The Pharmacolcoy pre test book has been really awesome with applying the pharm info.
2) I brought Robbins down with me to help cross-reference some Pathology. They have some older copies to check out and a newer one on reserve-if you want to limit the weight that you bring here.
3) First aid is also nice to have to help you prepare for BSCE2 but they have quite a few copies in the library that you can take out for about 3 weeks at a time.
Do not forget a lab coat and scrubs they will force you to pay alot of money if you forget them.
BIG TIP: Bring a passport picture with you. You will need a passport picture to attach to your USMLE application. You can take a passport picture down town in Kingstown but its a pain in the *** to find parking downtown. So just bring one or two with you and it will be one less thing, you will have to do down here. I wish some one would have told me to do the same.
Hope this helps

Dr. EJ no longer teaches Nutrition.. Someone new now that doesn't even have a Dr.
And unless you are someone that likes to write things, you don't need the path lab manual either. It's all online in ANGEL (pdf files) for free.

Since Dr. J isn't course director this year and the illustrious Dr. H oof Biochem fame is the course director, all bets are off on how the test is going to be- previous years it was all about the book and the questions at the back- this time who knows- think your class will probably be the only one would will e able to advis after you take the exam next week
