Have you ever wondered why a picture is requested with your application?

I can see people sending in professional Glamour-Shots in hopes that they influence admissions using the 'HOT' factor.

But seriously, why?

i once read somewhere that some US med schools has unofficially put "hotness" as a criteria to accept student...

whoa...i wonder if that's true...

then again, a lot of schools i applied to for both college and med school required the picture...dont know why...

maybe because it makes it more personal? or is that their way of saying "how hot are u?"

To maintain the good looking/not so good looking ratio that PKimm alluded to

It might be to put a face to the application but it is a documented fact that 'attractive' people are found innocent more often (all things being equal) when tried by juries.

Does this application give the Pretty-Boy Jimmy's of the world an edge?

I think it's because SGU, just like George Bush, doesn't care about black people. :D

OK, just to avoid problems, here is the clip, it is so hilarious the more I see it! that dude cannot speak English, but yet he spits out that comment at the best time and with the best coolness....http://movies.crooksandliars.com/Kayne-West-Bush-Black-People.mov

most schools do. They do it so the profs can get to know people. NYU im convinced selects students on the basis of good-looking-ness. stay on topic or thread will be locked.

research shows that hot people make more money.
Also states that they are more loved by the co-workers....i read this somewhere...forgot where (I think it was mens health)

Also, don't you know that by looking at pictures you could kind of profile people... :)

Anyway one can make a good arguement that asking for pictures isnt appropriate but of course youre seen on the interview trail. I will say its helpful after interviews to remember a person. We interview about 15 or 20 applicants for residency a year and its really really hard to remember them unless their particularly weird. And there are a lot of those.

So the SGU can statistically calculate good looking vs. not good looking students. Currently 35% good looking, 20% not good looking and 45% great after some beers.

It all on the website.

Damn!

Ok back to topic, maybe they send the pictures to interviewers so they know what you look like before meeting you, to avoid applicants sending someone else in for the interview..OK thats a bit farfetched.

Get used to it. You send in pictures to ERAS for residency applications as well.

Well upon acceptance, they use that picture for your school ID, and they put it on the wall in anatomy (they put pics of the entire class on the wall in the anat dept)

Well, then the picture is either going to help you or hurt you in your application.

Talking about pictures!

I just noticed that you can add a profile picture that people can look at when they go to your profile.

I posted a pic of myself for fun. Of course I cannot reveal too much:)

What did you write for your turn-ons/offs?

I don't think you have to be attractive, as long as you dress well and are well-groomed people are going to respond to you. You have to look put-together, and it's true if you go to the grocery store in sweats instead of "normal" clothes, people are gonna ignore you. It's weird how we all concentrate on looks and judge a person and their lifestyle based on the way they look.

I think the photos they ask for are mainly for identification, but on some subconscious level they do pick and choose.

Plus SarahTarah, I agree with you about the hair, I should have worked on mine too :)

Would it be at all possible that in an alternate universe (i.e. bizarro world) that somehow not only looks but also race might influence a chance at an interview?

For example, would it be at all possible (in bizarro world) that a non-minority would get preferential treatment because it shows that the school can provide stock to the old boy's club as well as being a source of multicultural talent?

DISCLAIMER: This post in NO WAY insinuates or presumes that any medical school would ever even consider such a thing.

i don't think they should give breaks to minorities...if medschool doesn't work out i'll become an "exotic" (because im not white) stripper... prolly make the same amount of money...
