Prowlers of the St. Matt's Forum,

So, I think there's no doubt there are way too many people on campus and in the building on any given day. So, what do YOU think should be done? I know plans for a new campus are supposedly in the works, but I was just wondering what others thought....

Yep. Especially before & during the exam period, it's a way too crowded. Sometimes I have to sit ON THE FLOOR in the libruary, because I can't find a space anywhere to sit, as so many students were waiting for the exams. Also in the lecture hall, people keep on knocking the other people's laptops because there are a way too narrow spaces in between the desks and so many students have to pass thru them. Hopefully the new building gets done soon to accomodate all of us a bit better... Thanks for raising it.

I would like to see stadium seating in the lecture halls or even desks with chairs so we had enough room to actually set our computers on the table with out the fear of them getting knocked off plus a little room to write if you needed to. I am really tired of the kindergarten style desks made for people 5 feet tall and under.

How about making attendance voluntary. Not only will this solve the overcrowding problem, but it will also benefit the students. Those students who come to class will benefit from a lower student/ teacher ratio, less crowding, more space in the library. Others who study better on their own, or late at night, can have the option of sleeping in the next day or simply staying in the comfort of their own residence or apartment.

Furthermore, I think lectures should be taped and made available online, open lab periods extended, especially in histology, and real case studies in doctor patient related only to the basic sciences of each semester.

I've often thought of this as a great idea; however, I've never seen it as a way to cut down on the crowding problem. I was talking with a fellow student the other day and they were telling me about how an aquaintance of theirs was in a US school where they have stenographers in the back of every lecture typing up the notes. After each day, whatever lectures you had will have their notes in you mailbox...crazyness!! :-P So, weather you wana skip class or just sit there and listen to the lecture, you never have to worry about notes or being there for that matter.

I think someone typing notes for you is a GREAT idea.... Call me lazy but i think this way i would be able to pay more attention to what the teacher is saying rather than being too busy trying to write what the teacher just said and miss on something important while you are writting... IT HAPPENS TO ME ALL THE TIME... and then i have to go back and ask the teacher to repeat what they just said.. this not only gets the teacher upset, but also wastes time because the teacher has to do the same thing twice...

Doesn't SMU supply notes to their students like other schools? I thought SMU had their notes on computer. Why do you need to bring a computer to class then?

I bring my laptop to class to type notes, I type faster than I write. If you can't see a particular slide from the ppt, it is great to have the ppt on your computer to follow along.

I'm down with that program...we'd only need about 1/2 that space the other half we could keep like it is and run a cat house :-P

Well, with SMU growing at an exponential rate these days, you knew this time would come. More and more highly qualified applicants are seeking admission to the best medical school around. SMU is only going to get more and more crowded, and I love it. I will take this kind of problem any day; this is a great problem to have. Because SMU has some of the top medical students out there now, many of the most talented students from the US and Canada are seeking admission. This in turn is going to draw more and more talented students, and the cycle continues. SMU is rolling!!:p :D

Oh yeah, I prefer to write notes during lecture; it keeps me focused in class (like a laser I might add). Have a nice day!:D

You guys are doing a great job promoting your school:)
If you don't do it, nobody else will do it for you. I ain't mad at ya:)
If the school is doing a great job, be proud to put it on the map! It's pure and simple....
I am anjoying every single moment of it! It just brought back the days I used to argue online with students from Rutgers. Just don't pull out the knives or the finger nails:) Peacefully, just represent your grounds!
