Guys
I need to know if i can get away with using older editions of the req'd textbooks which are so much cheaper than the brand new books out there. Do the profs really fuss abt this.

new editions mean updated info, since science is ever changing and rumor has it medicine is under science, medicine is always changing....but however maybe anatomy will be consistent, i dunno what other books you need but in the long run whats the difference in a $50,000 debt from a $50,500 debt just buy the best

I wouldn't be overly concerned with the first semester. Last time I compared 1990 to 2000, heart still has four chamber, pumps blood, and needs coumadin if you have a valve replacement. I think the make up of the blood cell has statyed the same too !!!!
I myself haven't gotten any first semseter books yet myself. I think if you don't have the book then obviously you should get it, but as for anatomy, physiology, I don't think much has changed. And what, we got embryology and histology ? I'm sure the same holds true there too.
The only things that in my opinion you want to have updated things are when you get into the second half, the clinical portion.
I am just getting the course books that I don't have. I have 3 anatomy books and three physio books, etc , I sure hope I can find what i need in one of them, I don't see the need to get another.

I need to save every bit that I can by getting the cheapest books . Same reason I am going to Spartan instead of some $40 000/yr med school. See you on the island

Just make sure you have books that are adequate. Undergrad and Medical anatomy/physiology boods I think are a bit different. So like the previous post pointed out, in the long run 50K and 50.5K are one in the same. No time to cut corners, I just happen to have 3 Anatomy and Phys books, 2 being from PA school, therefore I know the're adequate. So, back to the first sentence.
As for thinking alike....Well, then I'm sure we can delve into some intersting conversations
See you on the island. Oh yeah, I don't think I got your name ?
Chris
how about getting used books? amazon probably have them.
I thought Spartan also has a used bookstore -- run by the SGA?
and there must be books from all the students dropping out of Spartan.
dt.
ps. just kidding about the dropping out!

I think that the bookstore won't be up and going till January. 89.657 % sure
You know dt, that's a pretty good point you threw out there, the ones dropping out....perhaps I'll just wait and seize the opportunity :D
emerson24,
Take a look at the first paragraph, page 67 of the Spartan 2002-2004 catalogue. It mentions the Bookstore and the Copy Center run by the SGA.
I am thinking this is a "used" bookstore -- dont know why I think so, just a feeling.

I would personally recommend that you purchase your own required books at least for the first trimester. Once you get on the island, you will be able to consult the faculty, senior students, library holdings, SGA bookstore, and resources on the island as to what better and cheaper options are available for subsequent trimesters. For now as a new student, I would play it safe until I get a better idea of how and where I can save money.
As far as the editions go, I can tell you that the booklist included in the admission package is utterly outdated and I emailed the NM office a new updated booklist as I doubted they'll get on correcting it themselves anytime soon. I'm sure you would be just fine with older editions, I have a feeling that the courses will be taught with reference to them over the newest editions. But like it was pointed out, it's always a good idea to seek the most recent information. I'm sure there are students with newest editions like myself, for you to cross reference with if the need arises.

Yah, that's what it says alright :o I'm not sure what they are meaning by "bookstore". Reason being that in the new building they said they are putting a bookstore. I thought they told kirst to buy your books now because the bookstore won't be ready till January. Maybe it's a small shack with old books. I guess I'll find out.
EDIT- Man, did it take me this long to send it, two other posts were written ?

    Not a shack, but not a "bookstore" by any means. Picture the size of two long walk in closets stuck together.   It is a "store". They sell snacks, soups, drinks, photocopies can be done there, highlighters, that kind of stuff. There's one worker there usually and you can't enter, its more of a point to what you want place. :P The books they have are books students want to sell (not that many) and usually at the end of the tri what the 4th tri students sell like lamps, irons, and the things they don't or can't use in the states (240v).
Even though some students may sell their 1st tri books, it's a hassle when you are settling in. Save yourselves the aggrevation of having to ship your books from the states AFTER you arrive at Spartan. Shipping can take time. You can try to find bargains before 2nd tri not 1st
Bring your books with your the 1st time. Why make life hard  :P
