If you took the NBME and the USMLE, please post how much similar your USMLE scpre was to your NBME score.
In other words, by how much did the NBME exam predict your actual USMLE score?

I would really appreciate your posts.

There's 3 NBME tests for USMLE step I, should we try all 3 before our exam?
I saw most people post their NBME I & II Scores, how about NBME III?
Pls help with your experience or your hearings about that..Thanks

The most important factor is busting your butt the first two years of medical school. I took NMBE before I started studying. Then I studied first aid (with my personal notes during the first two years) from 8 - 12 pm followed by doing 150 questions in 50 question blocks. Followed this by reading every explanation, regardless if I got the question right or wrong. Did this routine for five weeks. Ended up totaling 3,000+ questions and covering first aid w/ Goljan high-yield notes. Like I said though, the most important thing was working very hard for two years and reviewing instead of learning in a short time period.

I heard people say that the NBME score is accurate to about +/- 10 points.

Please if you can post your NBME grades as well as the margin for the USMLE (you dont have to post ur USMLE score if you dont feel like it)

I really appreciate it.
Have my exam on Monday!

The NBME forms are subdivisions of the Basic Science and Clinical Science exams.
The Basic science is equivilant to Step 1
Clinical is for Step 2

How can NBME form 2 (clinical) predict your result in step 1? I always see people taking the 2 forms, but if you have not study for step 2 i supposed that your results in form 2 would be less than in form 1.

I'd say that the NBME exam can predict your score within +/- 10 points. In my case it was 8 points off.

for step 1 there are two nbme forms.....theyre actually nbme a and nbme b......apparently there is a third one for step 1 also. there are also 2 (i think) nbme exams for step 2

i took the first nbme and in the bar graph i had a lot of subjects in the borderline, and some in the low performance. then i took the nbme again, and everything was in higher performance, and one bar in the low performance, yet i received the same score on both? how is that possible? if i had achieved a higher performance on most of the subject areas wouldn't my overall score be somewhat increased? i don't understand....

Step 1 NBME predicted my score by 10 points. I got 10 points less than predicted.

On Step 2, NBME second part predicted my score almost exactly. It was off only 3 points on the the digit scale.....I got 3 points less than predicted.

Good luck.

There are NBME for step 1 basic science and step 2 clinical. Each of the steps have 3 practice exams now. Used to have only two. Step 1 NBME exam 1, 2 and now 3.

If you are taking Step 1. Take the NBME about a month before the exam and see where you stand. Take the second part about a week before the exam. If you are not over 430 or so.. reschedule.

For Step 2, do the same thing. NBME is a good predictor. I know because I have taken both of them and passed with scores that were predicted by the NBME exams. Step 1 I got 10 points less than predicted and on Step 2 I got 3 points less than predicted on the 3 digit scale.

Thank you all for your replies.
I am really grateful for all the info this thread is producing

I am a ROSS student who took the exam on Oct 24th. I talked to so many people and read the threads here, I hope it pays off!
What I mean is -> My friends told me about the NBME exam so I took it (I will post my official grade when I recieve my Step 1 exam!).
Then I read a thread about the Oasis trick -> so i followed up on the thread link and tried everything step by step on the wednesday of the same week, then 1 week later, and finally this past week. No results as of yet. I dont know what's going on in OASIS, they dont seem to be posting my Date of Exam on my profile. So I'm still waiting.

Well, I will post everything when I get some more info

Kaplan Q Book : 40%
Kaplan Q Bank : 65% *
Prometric Practice : 56%
NMBE I 1month before: 320
NBME II 1week before: 370

Actual Step 1: 186/76

This was my second attempt at the step1.
Numbers from my first attempt are not available.

*: KQB run through all questions twice. The first time random unused questions only. Any question I had the slightest doubt in, I intentionally left blank. Scores were 30%. The second time, random incorrect questions only. Those were about 50%. So mathematically I could have been doing 65% (30 + 70/2) but you need to take into account that the second pass was questions/answers I've seen before.

I could elaborate on how I studied... but... you *REALY* don't want to repeat my experience. Go emulate an A student for chrissakes.

Anyway, its over. I will now be hanging out at the VMD Step2 forums. :]

This thread is really helpful - I have to rate it 5 stars!!! Thanks for all who bared their souls and shared their scores and methods. It sound like those who did the best tested from the start of medical school, used First Aid and their own personal notes along with taking test blocks every day.

Hope this helps anyone concerned about passing or doing well on Step 1...

I just got my score in the mail yesterday. (I passed!) I took NBME Exam #1 3 weeks before Step 1 and Exam# 2 1 week before Step 1 .

I scored 10 points higher on Step 1 than the NBME exam 1.
I scored 3 points higher on Step 1 than the NBME exam 2.

So I think the NBME's are a good estimate of how you will do on Step 1...Definitely within a 10 point range, and this is what I have heard from many other students that have taken it recently.

Just remember to do all of Qbank Questions and First Aid for sure! Good luck! :)

NBME=National Board of Medical Examiners; please go to www.nbme.org (http://www.nbme.org) and it will tell you about the exams; they are assessments for step 1 and step 2, and as many say, are the best indicators on how well you will do on the actual exam. they cost $45 per exam.

1st NMBE USMLE eqiuv 198

Actual 87% 217-240
Remember it doesnt matter what your 3 digit score is, it depends on the 2 digit number.
