N.IX can be injured during tonsillectomy because it is near tonsilla palatina

The glossopharygeal n., CN IX, relays general sensory and taste sensation to the posterior 1/3 of the tongue. The anterior 2/3 portion is innervated by the lingual (general sensory) and chorda tympani (taste).
